Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A modular article of footwear comprises a sole structure having a foot-facing surface, a ground-engaging surface, and a peripheral side surface extending between the foot-facing surface and the ground-engaging surface. The peripheral side surface has at least one recess. The modular article of footwear includes an upper component, and a flange secured to the upper component and projecting therefrom. An inner surface of the flange fits against and is securable to the peripheral side surface of the sole structure with the flange in the at least one recess, and the upper component at least partially defining a foot-receiving cavity over the foot-facing surface. A method of manufacturing a customized article of footwear comprises receiving a request for an upper with a specified characteristic, and assembling the modular article of footwear having an upper in accordance with the request.

The invention claimed is: 1. A modular article of footwear comprising: a first module including: a sole structure having a foot-facing surface, a ground-engaging surface, and a peripheral side surface extending between the foot-facing surface and the ground-engaging surface, the peripheral side surface having at least one recess including a first slot extending around a heel region of the sole structure and a second slot extending vertically across the heel region of the sole structure and connected to the first slot; and a second module disjoined from the first module in a first state and joined to the first module in a second state, the second module including: an upper component having a split, a flange secured to the upper component and projecting therefrom, a ridge extending around a heel region of the flange, and a locating feature projecting from the heel region of the flange and connected to the ridge, wherein the flange has a first end at a first side of the split and a second end at a second side of the split, wherein an inner surface of the flange fits against and is securable to the peripheral side surface of the sole structure with the ridge of the flange in the first slot, the locating feature of the flange in the second slot, and an outer surface of the flange directly opposite the inner surface is exposed and faces away from the peripheral side surface of the sole structure, and wherein the upper component at least partially defines a foot-receiving cavity over the foot-facing surface of the sole structure. 2. The modular article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the sole structure and the upper component each includes a forefoot region at a front of the footwear, a midfoot region adjoining and aft of the forefoot region, and the heel region adjoining and aft of the midfoot region at a rear of the footwear, and wherein the first slot is a single elongated slot recessed into and extending around the peripheral side surface throughout the heel region of the sole structure, and the ridge is a single elongated ridge projecting inward from and extending around the heel region of the upper component. 3. The modular article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the sole structure is a single, one-piece, unitary structure. 4. The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the split is in a heel region of the upper component separating the heel region into a medial-side heel segment and a lateral-side heel segment such that the upper component is configured to be relatively flat when the second module is in the first state and disjoined from the first module. 5. The modular article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flange establishes a lower periphery of the second module, the ridge extends along an entirety of the lower periphery of the second module, the first slot extends around an entirety of the heel region of the peripheral side surface, and the ridge fits flush within the slot when the second module is in the second state. 6. The modular article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the second slot is recessed into the peripheral side surface of the sole structure and is substantially orthogonal to the first slot, the locating feature projects inward from the inner surface of the flange and is substantially orthogonal to the ridge, and the locating feature interfits with the second slot when the second module is in the second state. 7. The modular article of footwear of claim 6 , wherein the locating feature includes first, second, and third locating features disposed at first, second, and third locations of the flange, respectively, the second slot includes first, second, and third locating slots disposed at first, second, and third locations of the first slot, and the first, second, and third locating features are each disposed in a respective one of the first, second, and third slots when the inner surface of the flange fits against and is secured to the peripheral side surface of the sole structure. 8. The modular article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein: the upper component includes a first material; the flange includes a second material; the second material is different from the first material; the sole structure includes the second material; and the second material is a polymer foam. 9. A modular article of footwear comprising: a first module including: a sole structure having a foot-facing surface, a ground-engaging surface, and a peripheral side surface extending between the foot-facing surface and the ground-engaging surface, the peripheral side surface having at least one recess including a first slot extending around a heel region of the sole structure and a second slot extending vertically across the heel region of the sole structure and connected to the first slot; and a second module disjoined from the first module in a first state and joined to the first module in a second state, the second module including: an upper component having a flange secured to the upper component and projecting therefrom, a ridge projecting from and extending around a heel region of the flange, and a locating feature projecting from the heel region of the flange and connected to the ridge, wherein an inner surface of the flange fits against and is secured to the peripheral side surface of the sole structure with the ridge of the flange in the first slot and the locating feature of the flange in the second slot when the second module is in the second state, wherein an outer surface of the flange directly opposite the inner surface is exposed and faces away from the peripheral side surface of the sole structure when the second module is in the second state, and wherein the upper component serves as at least a portion of a footwear upper. 10. The modular article of footwear of claim 9 , wherein the sole structure and the upper component each includes a forefoot region, a midfoot region aft of the forefoot region, and the heel region aft of the midfoot region, the first slot is a single elongated slot recessed into and extending around the peripheral side surface throughout the heel region of the sole structure, and the flange is a single flange extending around the heel region of the upper component. 11. The modular article of footwear of claim 9 , wherein the sole structure is a single, one-piece, unitary structure. 12. The modular article of footwear of claim 9 , wherein: the upper component has a split; the flange has a first end at a first side of the split; and the flange has a second end at a second side of the split. 13.
