Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cable-stranding apparatus includes a stationary guide, a motor, a driven guide, and a controller electrically coupled to the motor. The stationary guide is configured to guide strand elements in a spaced-apart configuration and to pass a core member. The motor is operatively associated with a guide driver. The driven guide is disposed at least partially within the guide driver so as to rotate therewith. The driven guide is configured to receive the strand elements from the stationary guide, individually guide the strand elements received from the stationary guide, and to further pass the core member. The controller is electrically coupled to the motor and configured to control the rotational speed and direction of the motor.

First claim

We claim: 1. An SZ stranding apparatus comprising: a rotatable drive shaft defining an axial shaft hole therein; a guide member disposed in the axial shaft hole, wherein the guide member is fixed to the drive shaft so as to rotate therewith; and a positional feedback device that provides information about the rotational position of the guide member; and inductively-driven rotors that surround and are configured to drive rotation of the drive shaft; wherein the SZ stranding apparatus is configured to receive a plurality of optical fibers and perform SZ-stranding of the optical fibers to form an SZ-stranded assembly. 2. The SZ stranding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the guide member is configured to receive and individually guide the plurality of optical fibers. 3. The SZ stranding apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the guide member defines a plurality of guide holes for receiving the optical fibers. 4. The SZ stranding apparatus claim 3 , wherein the plurality of guide holes includes peripheral guide holes arranged symmetrically about a central hole. 5. The SZ stranding apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a controller electrically coupled to the SZ stranding apparatus and configured to control the rotational speed and direction of the rotatable drive shaft. 6. The SZ stranding apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the controller operates the SZ stranding apparatus according to a rotation relationship that defines rotation speed and direction as a function of at least one of time and line speed. 7. An SZ stranding system comprising: the SZ stranding apparatus of claim 1 , and a coating unit configured to receive the SZ-stranded optical fibers from the SZ stranding apparatus. 8. The SZ stranding system of claim 7 , wherein the coating unit comprises an extrusion station configured to extrude a protective coating around the SZ-stranded assembly. 9. The SZ stranding system of claim 8 , wherein the extruded protective coating comprises a material that includes polyethylene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). 10. The SZ stranding system of claim 7 , further comprising a take-up unit configured to receive the SZ-stranded assembly from the coating unit.
