Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one embodiment, a composition of matter includes a crystalline porous structure having a density in a range from about 30 to about 50 mg/cm 3 . In another embodiment, a kit includes an amorphous, porous material, an inert pressure medium, a heating source, and a sample chamber configured to withstand an applied pressure of at least about 20 GPa. Other aspects and embodiments of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description, which, when taken in conjunction with the drawings, illustrate by way of example the principles of the invention.

What is claimed is: 1. A composition of matter, comprising: a crystalline porous structure having a density in a range from about 30 to about 50 mg/cm 3 , wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises: carbon aerogel, silica aerogel, alumina aerogel, and/or titania aerogel, and wherein the crystalline porous structure is characterized by grains having a size in a range from about 1 nm to about 100 nm. 2. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises carbonized resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogel having a specific density of about 40 mg/cm 3 . 3. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises crystalline diamond aerogel. 4. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystalline porous structure exhibits sp 3 bonding. 5. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises one or more luminescent point defects. 6. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , further comprising one or more dopant elements. 7. The composition of matter as recited in claim 6 , wherein the one or more dopant elements comprise a fluorophore. 8. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises a lattice having fringes with a d-spacing of about 2 Å. 9. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein at least portions of the crystalline porous structure exhibit a (1,1,1) cubic structure. 10. A composition of matter, comprising: a crystalline porous structure having a density in a range from about 30 to about 50 mg/cm 3 wherein the crystalline porous structure comprises crystalline diamond aerogel, and wherein at least 90% of the crystalline porous structure is in the form of the crystalline diamond aerogel.
