Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An injection device for injecting medicament in a patient comprises a housing configured to house a fluid reservoir that has one of a plurality of volumes of medicament. An injection conduit fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir defines a fluid pathway from the fluid reservoir to the patient. A firing mechanism is coupled to the fluid reservoir and is configured to expel the medicament from the fluid reservoir through the injection conduit. A volume setting mechanism is coupled to the firing mechanism and is configured to select the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament for the firing mechanism to expel. A dose setting mechanism is configured to select all or a fraction of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament that is injected from the injection conduit when the firing mechanism is actuated.

We claim: 1. A method for assembling an injection device comprising: inserting a fluid container having a fluid reservoir including one of a plurality of volumes of medicament into a housing, the fluid container including an injection conduit fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir configured to define a fluid pathway from the fluid reservoir to a patient; setting a volume setting mechanism based on a size of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament; coupling the volume setting mechanism to a firing mechanism; and coupling the firing mechanism to the fluid reservoir, the firing mechanism configured to expel one of the plurality of volumes of medicament from the fluid reservoir through the injection conduit, the firing mechanism being coupled to a dose setting mechanism configured to select all or a fraction of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament that is injected from the injection conduit when the firing mechanism is actuated, wherein the firing mechanism includes a ram and the volume setting mechanism includes a nut threadably coupled to the ram, the nut being releasably retained in an initial position by a latch, and wherein setting the volume setting mechanism includes adjusting the initial position of the nut relative to the latch. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nut includes a plurality of indentations each configured to engage with a projection of the latch and adjusting the initial position of the nut relative to the latch includes engaging the projection of the latch with one indentation of the plurality of indentations of the nut. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least one indentation of the plurality of indentations extends around an exterior of the nut such that the projection can remain within the at least one indentation of the plurality of indentations as the nut is rotated relative to the latch. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the initial position of the nut relative to the latch includes rotating the nut relative to the latch. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the ram is rotatably fixed relative to the dose setting mechanism and adjusting the initial position of the nut includes temporarily preventing rotation of the dose setting mechanism while rotating the nut relative to the latch. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injection device includes a guard slidably coupled to the housing and the method includes sliding the guard relative to the housing to disengage the latch from the nut. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the initial position of the nut relative to the latch includes coupling the latch to the nut in one of a plurality of positions along an axial length of the nut, each of the plurality of positions along the axial length of the nut corresponding to one of the plurality of volumes of medicament for the firing mechanism to expel. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the latch includes a latch arm and setting the volume setting mechanism includes adjusting the initial position of the nut relative to the latch such that the latch arm engages the nut. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further includes: coupling the ram to a piston with a prime screw. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: adjusting the dose setting mechanism to select all or a fraction of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament that is injected from the injection conduit when the firing mechanism is actuated. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the firing mechanism includes a ram and the method further includes: coupling the ram to a piston, wherein the ram remains in contact with the piston while adjusting the dose setting mechanism. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the dose setting mechanism includes rotating a knob relative to the housing. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the dose setting mechanism advances the firing mechanism a predetermined distance relative to the fluid reservoir to prime the fluid reservoir. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the dose setting mechanism is independent of setting the volume setting mechanism. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the dose setting mechanism is performed after setting the volume setting mechanism. 16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: coupling a safety cap to a distal end of the housing and the firing mechanism such that decoupling the safety cap from the housing allows the firing mechanism to advance a predetermined distance relative to the fluid reservoir to prime the fluid reservoir. 17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injection device includes a biasing member and setting the volume setting mechanism includes adjusting a force of the biasing member. 18. The method of claim 1 , wherein setting the volume setting mechanism includes selecting a volume of about 0.4 milliliters, 0.6 milliliters, 0.8 milliliters, or 1 milliliter. 19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the setting the volume setting mechanism includes manually setting the volume setting mechanism. 20. A method for assembling an injection device comprising: inserting a fluid container having a fluid reservoir including one of a plurality of volumes of medicament into a housing, the fluid container including an injection conduit fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir configured to define a fluid pathway from the fluid reservoir to a patient; setting a volume setting mechanism based on a size of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament; coupling the volume setting mechanism to a firing mechanism; coupling the firing mechanism to the fluid reservoir, the firing mechanism configured to expel one of the plurality of volumes of medicament from the fluid reservoir through the injection conduit, the firing mechanism being coupled to a dose setting mechanism configured to select all or a fraction of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament that is injected from the injection conduit when the firing mechanism is actuated; and coupling a safety cap to a distal end of the housing and the firing mechanism such that decoupling the safety cap from the housing allows the firing mechanism to advance a predetermined distance relative to the fluid reservoir to prime the fluid reservoir. 21. A method for assembling an injection device comprising: inserting a fluid container having a fluid reservoir including one of a plurality of volumes of medicament into a housing, the fluid container including an injection conduit fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir configured to define a fluid pathway from the fluid reservoir to a patient; setting a volume setting mechanism based on a size of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament; coupling the volume setting mechanism to a firing mechanism; and coupling the firing mechanism to the fluid reservoir, the firing mechanism configured to expel one of the plurality of volumes of medicament from the fluid reservoir through the injection conduit, the firing mechanism being coupled to a dose setting mechanism configured to select all or a fraction of the one of the plurality of volumes of medicament that is injected from the injection conduit when the firing mechanism is actuated, wherein setting the volume setting mechanism includes selecting a volume of about 0.4 milliliters, 0.6 milliliters, 0.8 milliliters, or 1 milliliter. 22. A method for assembling an injection device comprising: inserting a fluid container having a fluid reservoir including one of a plura
