A robotic picking device for picking items from a containerised storage system wherein items are stored in storage bins in stacks within a framework having a grid system disposed above the stacks of bins. Robotic picking devices are disposed on the grid, the devices acting to pick containers from the stacks of bins. The storage system is provided with at least one picking device for picking items from bins and depositing them directly in delivery containers DT.

The invention claimed is: 1. A picking device configured for use on a grid-based storage system, the storage system comprising: a first set of parallel rails or tracks and a second set of parallel rails or tracks extending substantially perpendicularly to the first set of tracks or rails in a substantially horizontal plane to form a grid pattern having a plurality of grid spaces; and multiple bins located beneath the rails or tracks within a footprint of a single grid space, wherein the picking device comprises: a picker configured to pick at least one inventory item from at least one bin of the storage system and located beneath the rails or tracks; means for moving each item from the at least one bin to a predetermined delivery container DT; and at least one vehicle adapted to move laterally on the rails or tracks above the bins and/or delivery container DT including, a vehicle body, wherein the vehicle body comprises a cavity and the picker is located within the cavity; and a wheel assembly comprising a first set of wheels for engaging the first set of rails or tracks to guide movement of the picking device in a first direction, and a second set of wheels for engaging with the second set of rails or tracks to guide movement of the picking device in a second direction such that the picking device may be positioned above a predetermined bin to pick the item. 2. The picking device according to claim 1 , wherein the picking device substantially occupies a single grid space. 3. The picking device according to claim 1 , wherein the picker comprises a remotely or autonomously manipulatable robotic arm. 4. The picking device according to claim 1 , wherein the picker is movable in at least x-y-z directions. 5. The picking device according to claim 1 , wherein the picker accesses the at least one inventory item from the at least one bin through a bottom of the vehicle body. 6. The picking device according to claim 1 , wherein the picking device occupies more than one grid space. 7. The picking device according to claim 6 , wherein the picking device occupies an integer number of adjacent grid spaces. 8. The picking device according to claim 6 , wherein the picking device occupies 2×1 grid spaces, or wherein the picking device occupies 2×2 grid spaces. 9. The picking device according to claim 1 , further comprising a lifting means and bin gripper assembly for receiving a container in the cavity. 10. The picking device according to claim 9 , further comprising moving means, movable from a first position to a second position, wherein the moving means is for sliding a lifted bin from a first position where the bin is located after lifting, to a second position where the bin is located beneath the picker. 11. The picking device according to claim 10 , wherein the first position substantially corresponds to a first grid space of the horizontal rail or track plane, and the second position substantially corresponds to a second grid space of the horizontal rail or track plane adjacent to the first grid space. 12. The picking device according to claim 11 , wherein the picker is disposed above the second position. 13. A method of picking customer orders on a grid based storage system using a picking device, wherein the storage system includes: a first set of parallel rails or tracks and a second set of parallel rails or tracks extending substantially perpendicularly to the first set of tracks or rails in a substantially horizontal plane to form a grid pattern having a plurality of grid spaces; and multiple bins located beneath the rails or tracks within a footprint of a single grid space, and wherein the picking device includes: a picker configured to pick at least one inventory item from a predetermined bin of the multiple bins and located beneath the trails or tracks; means for moving each item from the bin to a predetermined delivery container DT; and at least one vehicle adapted to move laterally on the rails or tracks above the bin including a vehicle body, wherein the vehicle body comprises a cavity and the picker is located within the cavity, and a wheel assembly having a first set of wheels for engaging the first set of rails or tracks to guide movement of the picking device in a first direction, and a second set of wheels for engaging with the second set of rails or tracks to guide movement of the picking device in a second direction such that the picking device may be positioned above the bin to pick the at least one inventory item, the method comprising: positioning the picking device above the bin containing the at least one inventory item; picking the at least one inventory item for the customer order from the bin using the picker and withdrawing the at least one inventory item into the cavity of the picking device; moving the picking device to a position above the delivery container (DT); and placing the at least one inventory item in the delivery container DT. 14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the delivery container DT associated with a given customer order is filled via picking steps across a period of time. 15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the delivery container DT is located adjacent to the bin containing the at least one inventory item. 16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the delivery container DT comprises only a part of the customer order. 17. The method according to claim 16 , further comprising consolidating the delivery container DT with other delivery containers DT at a dispatch location. 18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the picking device is used to consolidate customer orders in the delivery container DT located in a picking portion of the grid, following the steps of: positioning the picking device over a first delivery container DT 1 ; picking an inventory item from the delivery container DT 1 ; moving the picking device to a position over a second delivery container DT 2 ; and placing the inventory item into the second delivery container DT 2 . 19. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising the preliminary steps of: instructing a load handling device to collect the bin from a stack in the storage system, wherein the bin contains the at least one inventory item required for a customer order; and depositing the bin in a vacant position beneath the grid of a robotic picking portion of the system. 20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein the storage system includes a plurality of the picking devices and a plurality of the load handling devices, the method comprising controlling the plurality of picking devices to act co-operatively with the plurality of load handling devices using a centralised control utility. 21. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the picking device is used to carry an other delivery container DT on the grid.
