The invention relates to the filtering of liquid samples, preferably in a laboratory environment, for example for collecting micro organisms from the liquid sample for subsequent testing. The invention provides a method for filtering a liquid sample which comprises providing a blank of a deformable sheet material and a filtration medium, deforming the blank to form a funnel extending above and about the filtration medium, introducing the liquid sample to be filtered into the so formed funnel, and filtering the liquid sample from the funnel through the filtration medium, for example to a downstream receptacle. The method is accordingly based on the concept that the funnel is not or at least not completely preformed but provided in a form of a blank of a deformable material sheet which is deformed so as to form the funnel at the point and time of use during filtration.

The invention claimed is: 1. A blank of deformable and expandable material for use in filtering a liquid sample with a filtration medium by: deforming and expanding at least a portion of the blank of deformable and expandable material to form a funnel extending above and about the filtration medium, introducing the liquid sample into the funnel, and filtering the liquid sample from the funnel through the filtration medium; the blank of deformable and expandable material comprising: a flat sheet having no hold-up volume, said blank of deformable and expandable material having an opening portion for passing the liquid sample, and said blank of deformable and expandable material having elasticity and/or plasticity and a size and shape selected such that the blank of deformable and expandable material is deformable and expandable to form said funnel having a hold-up volume effective for filtering said liquid sample. 2. The blank of deformable and expandable material according to claim 1 , wherein the blank of deformable and expandable material is disc-shaped or annular with the opening portion located in the center. 3. The blank of deformable and expandable material according to claim 1 , further comprising said filtration medium, connectable to the blank of deformable and expandable material so as to be liquid tight, and dimensioned such that it covers the opening portion. 4. The blank of deformable and expandable material according to claim 1 , wherein the blank of deformable and expandable material is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of latex, paraffin, PTFE, polyolefin, polypropylene, polyethylene, thermoplastic elastomer, polyurethane, silicon, PVDF, paper, parafilm and combinations thereof.
