What is claimed is: 1. A bone anchor, comprising: a bone engaging member extending along a central longitudinal axis from a first end to a second end, the bone engaging member comprising: an outer surface; an inner surface; an axial bore; a longitudinal expansion slot; a first plurality of ridges positioned on and protrude away from a portion of the outer surface and positioned proximate to the first end; a second plurality ridges positioned on and protrude away from a portion of the outer surface and positioned proximate to the second end; an expander comprising a first portion and a second portion positioned along a longitudinal axis; wherein the expander is positioned within the axial bore and in contacting relation to a portion of the inner surface opposite the portion of the outer surface with the first plurality of ridges when the expander is in a first position, wherein the expander is positioned within the axial bore and in contacting relation to a portion of the inner surface opposite the portion of the outer surface with the first plurality of ridges and in contacting relation to a portion of the inner surface opposite the portion of the outer surface with the second plurality of ridges when the expander is in a second position; and wherein the expander is configured to expand the longitudinal expansion slot adjacent to the first plurality of ridges and adjacent to the second plurality of ridges outward upon movement of the expander relative to the bone-engaging member from the first position to the second position. 2. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of ridges or the second plurality of ridges extend along the respective portion of the outer surface at an angle to the central longitudinal axis. 3. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein the bone engaging member further comprises a portion of the outer surface between the first plurality of ridges and the second plurality of ridges that is free from ridges being positioned thereon. 4. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of ridges and the second plurality of ridges are similarly sized and dimensioned. 5. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of ridges and the second plurality of ridges are dissimilarly sized and dimensioned. 6. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first plurality of ridges or at least one of the second plurality of ridges is asymmetrically shaped. 7. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first plurality of ridges or at least one of the second plurality of ridges is symmetrically shaped. 8. The bone anchor of claim 1 , wherein the bone engaging member includes a first stop ledge positioned on and protruding away from a first portion of the inner surface. 9. The bone anchor of claim 8 , wherein the first stop ledge extends along the first portion of the inner surface at an angle to the central longitudinal axis. 10. The bone anchor of claim 8 , wherein the expander includes a first engageable surface configured to engage the first stop ledge when the expander is in the second position. 11. The bone anchor of claim 10 , wherein the bone engaging member includes a second stop ledge positioned on and protruding away from a second portion of the inner surface. 12. The bone anchor of claim 11 , wherein the second stop ledge extends along the second portion of the inner surface at an angle to the central longitudinal axis. 13. The bone anchor of claim 12 , wherein the expander includes a second engageable surface configured to engage the second stop ledge when the expander is in the second position.
