Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for landing a tubing hanger in a wellhead and then orienting a tree (or spool, or flowline connection body) relative to the tubing hanger while landing the tree on the wellhead are provided. This alignment is accomplished without the use of either a tubing spool or a BOP stack with an orientation pin. The tubing hanger alignment devices may be used to orientate the tree as the tree is landed so that the couplings and stabs between the tree and the tubing hanger line up with each other just at the moment of landing.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a tubing hanger positioned in a wellhead, wherein the tubing hanger comprises one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic couplings; a tubular housing comprising one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic lines disposed therein; a tubing hanger alignment device comprising: an alignment body rotatably coupled to the tubular housing and defining one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries in an annular space between the tubular housing and the alignment body, the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries being located proximate a first end of the alignment body; one or more couplings proximate a second end of the alignment body opposite the first end; and one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic lines extending through the alignment body between the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries and the one or more couplings, the one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic lines being coupled to the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries at one end thereof and coupled to the one or more couplings on the alignment body at an opposite end thereof. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tubing hanger alignment device further comprises: a timing ring coupled to the alignment body, wherein the timing ring comprises one or more keyed features extending therefrom; and a timing hub mounted to the tubing hanger, wherein the timing hub comprises complementary features to receive the keyed features of the timing ring therein. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the alignment body comprises a helical groove formed in an external surface thereof, wherein the timing ring is coupled to the alignment body via a pin extending from the timing ring into the helical groove. 4. The system of claim 3 , further comprising: a vertical alignment slot formed in the alignment body and extending from an upper end of the helical groove; and a final alignment pin connection formed between a lower end of the alignment body and an upward facing surface of the tubing hanger. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tubing hanger alignment device is self-aligning between the tubular housing and the tubing hanger. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tubular housing comprises one of a tree body, a spool, or a flowline connection body. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tubing hanger alignment device is coupled to the tubing hanger. 8. A method, comprising: coupling a tubing hanger alignment device to a tubular housing, wherein the tubing hanger alignment device comprises one or more couplings disposed thereon, an alignment body rotatably coupled to the tubular housing and defining one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries in an annular space between the tubular housing and the alignment body, the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries being located proximate a first end of the alignment body, the one or more couplings being proximate a second end of the alignment body opposite the first end, and one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic lines extending through the alignment body between the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries and the one or more couplings, the one or more hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic lines being coupled to the one or more electrical or hydraulic galleries at one end thereof and coupled to the one or more couplings at an opposite end thereof; lowering the tubular housing with the tubing hanger alignment device at least partially into a wellhead, the wellhead having a tubing hanger disposed therein; orienting the one or more couplings of the tubing hanger alignment device so that they align with one or more couplings on the tubing hanger, by rotating the alignment body while lowering the tubular housing into the wellhead; and landing the tubular housing in the wellhead, wherein the tubing hanger alignment device communicatively couples hydraulic, electric, and/or fiber optic lines of the tubular housing with the one or more couplings on the tubing hanger. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the tubing hanger alignment device further comprises a timing ring coupled to the alignment body, wherein a timing hub is mounted to the tubing hanger, and wherein orienting the one or more couplings of the tubing hanger alignment device comprises: interfacing keyed features on the timing ring with complementary features on the timing hub; and rotating the alignment body via a pin extending from the timing ring into a helical slot formed on the alignment body. 10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising landing the one or more couplings of the tubing hanger alignment device on the one or more couplings of the tubing hanger via the pin interacting with a vertical alignment slot formed in the alignment body extending from an upper end of the helical slot. 11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising forming a final alignment pin connection between a lower end of the alignment body and an upward facing surface of the tubing hanger. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein coupling the tubing hanger alignment device to the tubular housing comprises coupling the tubing hanger alignment device to one of a tree body, a spool, or a flowline connection body. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more couplings of the tubing hanger alignment device and the one or more couplings on the tubing hanger self-align as the tubular housing is lowered into the wellhead.
