Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A bed system includes microclimate control capabilities for providing quality sleep experience. The bed system can include a microclimate control subsystem configured to supply conditioned air (e.g., heated or cooled air) to a mattress, or draw ambient air from the mattress, to achieve a desired temperature at the top of the mattress. Utilizing supply of conditioned air to provide air at desired temperature to the mattress system, or utilizing air suction to drain heat away from the mattress system, can provide precise microclimate control at the mattress, thereby permitting conformable sleep.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for controlling a microclimate of a mattress, comprising: activating a heating element to heat air; activating a reversible fan in a direction to supply the heated air to a top of the mattress; controlling the reversible fan in an opposite direction to draw an amount of air from the top of the mattress for a predetermined period time; detecting a temperature of the amount of air drawn from the top of the mattress; and activating the heating element and the reversible fan again whereby activation of at least one of the heating element and the reversible fan is adjusted based on the temperature detected, wherein activating the reversible fan comprises: activating the reversible fan in the direction to supply the heated air to a top of the mattress for a first period of time to control a microclimate at the top of the mattress, wherein controlling the reversible fan in an opposite direction comprises: controlling the reversible fan in the opposite direction to draw an amount of air from the top of the mattress for a second period time, the second period of time being shorter than the first period of time, and wherein activating the heating element and the reversible fan again comprises: activating the heating element and the reversible fan again for a third period of time whereby air is supplied in a manner different than during the first period of time as a function of the detected temperature of the air drawn during the second period of time. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: detecting a humidity of the air drawn from the top of the mattress, wherein activating the heating element and the reversible fan again comprises activating the heating element and the reversible fan again whereby activation of at least one of the heating element and the reversible fan is adjusted based on the detected temperature and the detected humidity. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mattress includes: a top foam layer defining the top of the mattress; and an air insert pad arranged under the top foam layer and configured to permit an airflow rate being higher than an airflow rate of the top foam layer. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein controlling the reversible fan comprises activating the reversible fan in the opposite direction to draw air from the air insert pad, wherein detecting the temperature comprises detecting the temperature of the air drawn from the air insert pad, and wherein activating the heating element and the reversible fan again comprises adjusting activation of the fan based on the temperature. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and third periods of time are between 5 and 300 minutes long and wherein the second period of time is between 5 and less than 300 seconds long. 6. A method for controlling a microclimate of a mattress, comprising: activating a heating element to heat air; activating a reversible fan in a direction to supply the heated air to a top of the mattress; controlling the reversible fan in an opposite direction to draw an amount of air from the top of the mattress for a predetermined period time; detecting a temperature of the amount of air drawn from the top of the mattress; and activating the heating element and the reversible fan again whereby activation of at least one of the heating element and the reversible fan is adjusted based on the temperature detected wherein activating the reversible fan in the direction comprises supplying the heated air to the top of the mattress over a first period to control a microclimate at the top of the mattress, wherein controlling the reversible fan in the opposite direction comprises sampling air temperature at the microclimate over a sampling period by reversing airflow to draw air from the mattress to a temperature sensor, and wherein activating the heating element and the reversible fan again comprises supplying air to the mattress again over a second period whereby air is supplied in a manner different than during the first period as a function of the air temperature sampled while airflow was reversed. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first and second periods are between 5 and 300 minutes long and wherein the sampling period is between 5 and less than 300 seconds long. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the temperature sensor is arranged adjacent the reversible fan. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the temperature sensor is arranged outside of the mattress. 10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the temperature sensor is arranged in an airflow path between the reversible fan and the mattress. 11. A method for controlling a microclimate of a mattress, comprising: activating an air conditioning element to condition air; activating a reversible fan in a direction to supply the conditioned air to a top of the mattress; controlling the reversible fan in an opposite direction to draw an amount of air from the top of the mattress for a predetermined period time; detecting a temperature of the amount of air drawn from the top of the mattress; and activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again whereby activation of at least one of the air conditioning element and the reversible fan is adjusted based on the temperature detected, wherein activating the reversible fan comprises: activating the reversible fan in the direction to supply the conditioned air to a top of the mattress for a first period of time to control a microclimate at the top of the mattress, wherein controlling the reversible fan in an opposite direction comprises: controlling the reversible fan in the opposite direction to draw an amount of air from the top of the mattress for a second period time, the second period of time being shorter than the first period of time, and wherein activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again comprises: activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again for a third period of time whereby air is supplied in a manner different than during the first period of time as a function of the detected temperature of the air drawn during the second period of time. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: detecting a humidity of the air drawn from the top of the mattress, wherein activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again comprises activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again whereby activation of at least one of the air conditioning element and the reversible fan is adjusted based on the detected temperature and the detected humidity. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the mattress includes: a top foam layer defining the top of the mattress; and an air insert pad arranged under the top foam layer and configured to permit an airflow rate being higher than an airflow rate of the top foam layer. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein controlling the reversible fan comprises activating the reversible fan in the opposite direction to draw air from the air insert pad, wherein detecting the temperature comprises detecting the temperature of the air drawn from the air insert pad, and wherein activating the air conditioning element and the reversible fan again comprises adjusting activation of the fan based on the temperature. 15.
