There is provided a method including receiving a playback system identifier corresponding to a playback system, generating a blockchain corresponding to a content identifier identifying a content, wherein the blockchain is uniquely associated with the content identifier, establishing, in the blockchain, a block corresponding to the playback system identifier, sending an encrypted version of the content to the playback system, and in response to one or more updates to the blockchain by the playback system, providing a content encryption key to the playback system for decrypting the encrypted version of the content.

We claim: 1. A method comprising: receiving a playback system identifier corresponding to a playback system; generating a blockchain corresponding to a content identifier identifying a content, wherein the blockchain is uniquely associated with the content identifier; establishing, in the blockchain, a block corresponding to the playback system identifier; sending an encrypted version of the content to the playback system; and in response to one or more updates to the blockchain by the playback system, providing an encrypted content encryption key to the playback system for decrypting the encrypted version of the content, wherein the encrypted content encryption key is generated by encrypting a content encryption key, using a key corresponding to the playback system; wherein the one or more updates to the blockchain indicate at least one of (i) an installation of the encrypted version of the content at the playback system, (ii) receipt of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system, or (iii) an attempted screening of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the key is a public key. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining a quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system recorded in the blockchain; tracking a reported quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system; and comparing the quantity of playbacks of the content with the reported quantity of playbacks to determine piracy. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content encryption key is an asymmetric key. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blockchain comprises a software code that is configured to determine the one or more updates to the blockchain. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the software code is further configured to automatically notify a content distribution system of the one or more updates to the blockchain. 7. A method comprising: receiving a playback system identifier corresponding to a playback system; generating a blockchain corresponding to a content identifier identifying a content, wherein the blockchain is uniquely associated with the content identifier; establishing, in the blockchain, a block corresponding to the playback system identifier; providing an encrypted version of the content to the playback system; including, in the blockchain, a software code and an encrypted content encryption key for decrypting the encrypted version of the content, wherein the encrypted content encryption key is generated by encrypting a content encryption key, using a key corresponding to the playback system; and determining, by the software code in the blockchain, one or more updates to the blockchain by the playback system, wherein the one or more updates to the blockchain indicate at least one of (i) an installation of the encrypted version of the content at the playback system, (ii) receipt of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system, or (iii) an attempted screening of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system; in response to determining the one or more updates to the blockchain, providing, by the software code in the blockchain, the encrypted content encryption key included in the blockchain to the playback system for decrypting the encrypted version of the content. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the key is a public key. 9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising: determining a quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system recorded in the blockchain; tracking a reported quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system; and comparing the quantity of playbacks of the content with the reported quantity of playbacks to determine piracy. 10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the content encryption key is an asymmetric key. 11. A system comprising: a hardware processor configured to: receive a playback system identifier corresponding to a playback system; generate a blockchain corresponding to a content identifier identifying a content, wherein the blockchain is uniquely associated with the content identifier; establish, in the blockchain, a block corresponding to the playback system identifier; send an encrypted version of the content to the playback system; and in response to one or more updates to the blockchain by the playback system, provide an encrypted content encryption key to the playback system for decrypting the encrypted version of the content, wherein the encrypted content encryption key is generated by encrypting a content encryption key, using a key corresponding to the playback system; wherein the one or more updates to the blockchain indicate at least one of (i) an installation of the encrypted version of the content at the playback system, (ii) receipt of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system, or (iii) an attempted screening of the encrypted version of the content by the playback system. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the key is a public key. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to: determine a quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system recorded in the blockchain; track a reported quantity of playbacks of the content by the playback system; and compare the quantity of playbacks of the content with the reported quantity of playbacks to determine piracy. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the content encryption key is an asymmetric key. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the blockchain comprises a software code that is configured to determine the one or more updates to the blockchain. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the software code is further configured to automatically notify the system of the one or more updates to the blockchain.
