Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for supply chain management using mobile devices with a server on an electronic data network includes receiving identifying information for a product transmitted from a mobile device via the network, the server being periodically updated with product recall data. The server queries a traceability server via the network for master data and event data related to the product using the identifying information. The server processes the recall data, master data, and event data to produce product data which is output to the mobile device.

What is claimed is: 1. A check-out register for a point of sale, the register comprising: a barcode scanner comprising a color camera to generate a color barcode image of a product barcode; a processor to: receive information identifying a consumer based on a loyalty identification presented by the consumer; and receive barcode data for a product the consumer is purchasing including the color barcode image from the barcode scanner, in which a weighting of at least one color channel of the barcode is reduced to reduce noise in the color barcode image; an electronic data network interface to connect the register to an electronic data network; an interface for communicating with a traceability server, the traceability server storing supply chain records indicating: product history throughout the manufacturing and distribution of one or more products; master and events data for the one or more products; and recall information for the one or more products; the register to: access the traceability server, using the barcode data, to obtain the supply chain record for the product the consumer is purchasing; filter the supply chain record based on user-defined filters; determine from the supply chain record, comprising the master and events data for the product, when there is a reason for the consumer to avoid the product, wherein the reason is based on a validity check of the supply chain record; and in response to a determination that there is a reason for a consumer to avoid the product, output a notification of the reason to avoid the product. 2. The register of claim 1 , the register further programmed to, when the product is a food item, access a recipe including the food item using a wireless transceiver of the interface. 3. The register of claim 1 , the register further programmed to: display an option to purchase the product; accept user input with the user input device to purchase the product; and in response to user input to purchase the product, completing purchase of the product electronically using a wireless transceiver. 4. The register of claim 1 , the register further programmed to search for a downloadable coupon for the product based on the barcode data. 5. The register of claim 1 , further comprising a web server to: receive the barcode data for the product from a point of sale; and based on the received barcode data, provide the supply chain record for the product to a mobile device. 6. The register of claim 5 , wherein the barcode scanner outputs a color barcode image, in which a weighting of at least one color channel of the barcode is reduced to reduce noise in the color barcode image. 7. The register of claim 5 , wherein the server is further programmed to, with the processor, activate a cron job to obtain the recall information and provide the recall information on the product to a device at the point of sale. 8. A check-out register for a point of sale, the register comprising: a processor to receive information identifying a consumer based on a loyalty identification presented by the consumer; a barcode scanner to generate barcode data from a barcode for a product the consumer is purchasing, wherein the barcode scanner comprises a color camera to generate a color barcode image, the scanner programmed to reduce a weighting of at least one color channel of the barcode to reduce noise in the color barcode image; an electronic data network interface to connect the register to an electronic data network; an interface for communicating with a traceability server, the traceability server storing supply chain records indicating: product history throughout the manufacturing and distribution of one or more of products, wherein the product history comprises source operations related to the raw materials of the one or more products, manufacturing operations related to transportation information for the one or more products, retail operations, and a location history for the one or more products; master and events data for the one or more products; and recall information for the one or more products; the register to: access the traceability server, using the barcode data, to obtain the supply chain record for the product the consumer is purchasing; filter the supply chain record based on user-defined filters; generate a chain of custody record for the product by compiling the product history for the product; determine from the supply chain record, comprising the master data and events data for the product, when there is a reason for the consumer to avoid the product, wherein the reason is based on a validity check of the location history for the product against a location of the barcode scanner; and in response to a determination that there is a reason for a consumer to avoid the product, output: the chain of custody record; and a notification of the reason to avoid the product. 9. The register of claim 8 , the register further programmed to, when the product is a food item, access a recipe including the food item using a wireless transceiver of the interface. 10. The register of claim 8 , the register further programmed to: display an option to purchase the product; accept user input with the user input device to purchase the product; and in response to user input to purchase the product, completing purchase of the product electronically using a wireless transceiver. 11. The register of claim 8 , the register further programmed to search for a downloadable coupon for the product based on the barcode data. 12. The register of claim 8 , further comprising a web server to: receive the barcode data for the product from a point of sale; and based on the received barcode data, provide the supply chain record for the product to a mobile device. 13. The register of claim 12 , wherein the barcode scanner outputs a color barcode image, in which a weighting of at least one color channel of the barcode is reduced to reduce noise in the color barcode image. 14. The register of claim 12 , wherein the server is further programmed to, with the processor, activate a cron job to obtain the recall information. 15. The register of claim 14 , wherein the server is further programmed to, with the processor, provide the recall information the product to a device at the point of sale. 16. A web server comprising: a processor; an electronic data network interface to connect the server to an electronic data network; an interface for communicating with a traceability server, the traceability server storing a supply chain record for a product, wherein the supply chain record indicates: product history throughout the manufacturing and distribution for the product, wherein the product history comprises source operations related to the raw materials of one or more products, manufacturing operations related to transportation information for the one or more products, retail operations, and a location history for the one or more products; master and events data for the one or more of products, wherein the events data comprises shipping and storage information for the one or more products; and recall information for the one or more products; and an interface for communicating via the electronic data network with a mobile device; the web server programmed to, with the processor: receive barcode data for the product from the mobile device, wherein a color barcode image is acquired using a color camera on the mobile device, in which a weighting of at least one color channel of the barcode is reduced to reduce noise in the color barcode image; access th
