A dialysis method to enable a patient to undergo both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments is disclosed. The method includes determining, via a base unit controller, whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed. If the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating first software instructions that cause a base unit to use a first fluid stored in a fluid container. If the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating second software instructions that cause the base unit to use a second, different fluid from an online source and selectively move the second, different fluid to a blood treatment unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment. The blood treatment unit is operable with the base unit to perform the extracorporeal blood treatment on a patient.

The invention is claimed as follows: 1. A method for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments, the method comprising: determining, via a base unit controller, whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed by detecting whether a blood treatment unit is docked to a base unit of the base unit controller; when the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed, operate first software instructions that cause the base unit to use a first fluid stored in a fluid container; and when the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, operate second software instructions that cause the base unit to use a second, different fluid from an online source, and selectively move the second, different fluid to the blood treatment unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment, the blood treatment unit being operable with the base unit to perform the extracorporeal blood treatment on a patient, the blood treatment unit including a blood pump configured to pump blood from the patient and back to the patient and a controller for controlling the blood pump, wherein the base unit controller is separate from the controller of the blood treatment unit. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid is a peritoneal dialysis dialysate and the second fluid is an extracorporeal blood treatment dialysate. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second fluid is a replacement fluid. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood treatment unit further includes a user interface for displaying at least one of blood pump settings or blood parameter readings. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein if the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the second software instructions additionally cause the base unit in combination with the base unit controller to: detect blood in a dialysate return line when the blood treatment unit is docked to the base unit; and provide a notification indicative of the detected blood. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein if the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the second software instructions additionally cause the base unit in combination with the base unit controller to: monitor sodium in dialysis fluid when the blood treatment unit is docked to the base unit; and provide a notification indicative of the monitored sodium. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein if the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the second software instructions additionally cause the base unit in combination with the base unit controller to prepare dialysis fluid using the second, different fluid from the online source, and wherein the dialysis fluid is instead selectively moved to the blood treatment unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controller of the blood treatment unit is programmed to control at least one of the following: (i) air in blood detection, (ii) operational speed of the blood pump, (iii) blood line priming, (iv) blood rinseback, (v) blood line access disconnection, or (vi) valves associated with a blood treatment disposable. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the peritoneal dialysis treatment is performed at a first time and the extracorporeal blood treatment is performed at a second time. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood treatment unit includes a blood filter that receives the second, different fluid from the base unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment. 11. A method for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments, the method comprising: determining, via a base unit controller, whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed by determining whether a peritoneal dialysis unit is docked to a base unit of the base unit controller; when the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed, operate first software instructions that cause the base unit to receive, in a user interface of the peritoneal dialysis unit, user inputs related to the peritoneal dialysis treatment, use a first fluid stored in a fluid container, selectively move the first fluid to the peritoneal dialysis unit for use in the peritoneal dialysis treatment, and pump, using a dialysis fluid pump and a control unit of the peritoneal dialysis unit, the first fluid through a patient line to a peritoneal cavity of a patient for a dwell period of the peritoneal dialysis treatment according to the user inputs to perform the peritoneal dialysis treatment; and when the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, operate second software instructions that cause the base unit to use a second, different fluid from an online source for the extracorporeal blood treatment, wherein the base unit controller is separate from the control unit of the peritoneal dialysis unit. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first fluid is a peritoneal dialysis dialysate and the second, different fluid is an extracorporeal blood treatment dialysate. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed includes performing a handshake routine between the base unit controller and the control unit of the peritoneal dialysis unit to confirm that the peritoneal dialysis unit is properly docked to the base unit. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the base unit and the peritoneal dialysis unit are configured to share data via a wired or wireless connection. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the user interface controls both the base unit and the peritoneal dialysis unit. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the peritoneal dialysis treatment is performed at a first time and the extracorporeal blood treatment is performed at a second time.
