Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A firearm including a barrel, receiver, indirect gas system and an adjustable gas block designed to interface with the indirect gas system is provided. Four indexable positions of adjustment are provided for on the adjustable gas block. Positions of adjustment are selected based on the use of a silencer, use of under-powered ammunition, the presence of un-burnt powder and debris in the host firearms operating system, or if the weapon is being fired under “ideal” circumstances. The provided gas block is designed to function with an indirect gas operating system. Excess gas from the operating system is not vented from the gas block thereby generating excess flash and sound. No tool is required to manipulate the adjustment mechanism of the gas.

The invention claimed is: 1. An adjustable gas block for a firearm, the adjustable gas block comprising: a gas block housing having a barrel receiving channel, and a cylindrical bore with a port in communication with the barrel receiving channel; a nozzle, wherein a part of the nozzle is received in the cylindrical bore, wherein the nozzle comprises a plurality of ports spaced about the part of the nozzle received in the cylindrical bore; and a rotatable knob coupled to the nozzle, wherein the rotatable knob retains the nozzle within the cylindrical bore of the gas block housing and controls rotational movement of the nozzle within the cylindrical bore of the gas block housing, wherein manipulation of the rotatable knob with respect to the gas block housing rotates the nozzle within the cylindrical bore and selectively places a port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle in communication with the port of the cylindrical bore, and wherein the rotatable knob includes a series of notches, and the gas block housing includes a spring loaded detent and ball, and wherein the spring provides a force to the ball which works in conjunction with the series of notches on the rotatable knob to selectively place the port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle in communication with the port of the cylindrical bore. 2. The adjustable gas block of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable knob has a centrally located void that receives an end of the nozzle. 3. The adjustable gas block of claim 1 , wherein the nozzle includes a radial flange on an opposite side of the gas block housing from the rotatable knob, and the radial flange and the rotatable knob work in conjunction with each other to retain the nozzle within the cylindrical bore of the gas block housing. 4. The adjustable gas block of claim 1 , wherein the gas block housing includes a groove, and the rotatable knob is received in and rotatable within the groove of the gas block housing. 5. The adjustable gas block of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable knob includes a pin bore, and the nozzle includes a corresponding pin bore, the adjustable gas block further comprising a pin received in the pin bore and the corresponding pin bore thereby removably retaining the rotatable knob to the nozzle. 6. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ports includes two ports. 7. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ports includes three ports. 8. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein the rotatable knob can be selectively aligned at four positions of adjustment. 9. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein the series of notches of the rotatable knob correspond to a plurality of selectable rotatable positions of the nozzle, all but one of the selectable rotatable positions correlating to positions in which one of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is selectively placed in communication with the port of the cylindrical bore, and wherein the one of the selectable positions correlates to a position in which none of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is placed in communication with the port of the cylindrical bore. 10. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein one of the plurality of ports of the nozzle has a different size than another of the plurality of ports of the nozzle. 11. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein a first port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle has a standard size for a rifle barrel being used with a gas operating system, and a second port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is oversized with respect to the first port. 12. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein a first port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle has a standard size for a rifle barrel being used with a gas operating system, and a second port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is undersized with respect to the first port. 13. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein a first port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle has a standard size for a rifle barrel being used with a gas operating system, a second port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is oversized with respect to the first port, and a third port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle is undersized with respect to the first port. 14. The adjustable gas block of claim 1 , wherein the port of the cylindrical bore is aligned at an angle in relation to the cylindrical bore and the cylindrical bore is configured to transmit gas from an opening to the port during operation. 15. The adjustable gas block in claim 1 , wherein the gas block housing is a ventless gas block housing that does not vent excess gas from the adjustable gas block into atmosphere around the gas block housing. 16. A firearm having the adjustable gas block of claim 1 , the firearm comprising: a receiver; a barrel connected to the receiver; and a gas operating system, wherein the nozzle includes an internal void placed into selective communication with the barrel and the gas operating system through the port of the plurality of ports via the manipulation of the rotatable knob and selective placement of the port of the plurality of ports of the nozzle in communication with the port of the cylindrical bore.
