Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Eyewear devices including a tether and methods for identifying proper installation of the tether are disclosed. An eyewear device includes transmission lines extending through the temples to electrical and electronic components positioned adjacent to edges of a frame. A tether is attached to the temples to enable power and communication flow between the electrical and electronic components rather than through the frame. Proper installation is identified based on communications passing between the electrical and electronic components via the tether.

What is claimed is: 1. An eyewear device comprising: a frame configured to support an optical element, the frame having a first edge and a second edge; a first temple having a first proximal end adjacent the first edge of the frame, a first distal end, and a first set of one or more transmission lines including a first conductor adjacent the first distal end; a second temple having a second proximal end adjacent the second edge of the frame, a second distal end, and a second set of one or more transmission lines including a second conductor adjacent the second distal end; a tether including a third set of one or more transmission lines configured to connect the first conductor adjacent the first distal end to the second conductor adjacent the second distal end; a first processor and a first transceiver positioned in the first temple or in the frame adjacent the first edge; and a second processor and a second transceiver positioned in the second temple or the frame adjacent the second edge; wherein the first and second processors are configured to communicate with one another via the first and second transceivers through the tether. 2. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the first processor and the first transceiver are positioned in the frame adjacent the first edge and wherein the first set of one or more transmission lines extends from the proximal end to the distal end. 3. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein: the first processor is configured to detect connection of a first mating connector of the tether to a first connector of the eyewear device and to send a communication signal over the tether responsive to detection of the connection of the first mating connector; the second processor is configured to receive the communication signal from the tether and send a responsive communication signal; the first processor is further configured to receive from the tether the responsive communication and process the responsive communication to identify proper installation of the tether to the eyewear device. 4. The eyewear device of claim 3 , further comprising a notification device supported by at least one of the frame, the first temple, the second temple, or the tether and wherein the first processor is configured to notify a user via the notification device when proper installation of the tether to the eyewear device is identified. 5. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the tether is permanently attached to the first and second temples. 6. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the tether is detachably coupled to at least one of the first and second temples. 7. The eyewear device of claim 6 , wherein the first temple includes a connector selected from the group consisting of a universal serial bus (USB) connector, a friction fit connector, and a magnetic attachment connector and the tether includes a mating connector selected from the group consisting of a USB connector, a friction fit connector, and a magnetic attachment connector. 8. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the tether includes a flexible sheath surrounding the third set of one or more transmission lines. 9. The eyewear device of claim 8 , wherein the flexible sheath is selected from the group consisting of silicone, a thermoplastic elastomer, and a fabric. 10. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the third set of one or more transmission lines includes at least one of: power transmission lines; data transmission lines; or clock transmission lines. 11. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a bridge between the first edge and the second edge and wherein there are no transmission lines that pass through the bridge. 12. A tether for use with an eyewear device including a frame having a first edge and a second edge, a first temple having a first proximal end adjacent the first edge of the frame, a first distal end, and a first connector adjacent the first distal end, a second temple having a second proximal end adjacent the second edge of the frame, a second distal end, and a second connector adjacent the second distal end, a first processor and a first transceiver positioned in the first temple or in the frame adjacent the first edge, and a second processor and a second transceiver positioned in the second temple or the frame adjacent the second edge, wherein the tether comprises: a transmission line having a first end and a second end; a first mating connector coupled to the first end of the transmission line, the first mating connector configured to mate with the first connector adjacent the first distal end; a second mating connector coupled to the second end of the transmission line, the second mating connector configured to mate with the second connector adjacent the second distal end; and a flexible sheath surrounding the transmission line; wherein the tether is configured to enable the first and second processors to communicate with one another via the first and second transceivers through the tether. 13. The tether of claim 12 , wherein the first temple includes a connector selected from the group consisting of a universal serial bus (USB) connector, a friction fit connector, and a magnetic attachment connector and the tether includes a mating connector selected from the group consisting of a USB connector, a friction fit connector, and a magnetic attachment connector. 14. The tether of claim 12 , wherein the flexible sheath is selected from the group consisting of silicone, a thermoplastic elastomer, and a woven fabric. 15. The tether of claim 12 , wherein the transmission line includes at least one of: power transmission lines; data transmission lines; or clock transmission lines. 16. A method for detecting installation of a tether on an eyewear device, the eyewear device including a frame, a first temple extending from a first edge of the frame, a second temple extending from a second edge of the frame, a first processor and a first transceiver positioned in the frame adjacent the first edge or in the first temple, and a second processor and a second transceiver positioned in the frame adjacent the second edge or in the second temple, the method comprising: detecting, by the eyewear device, connection of a first mating connector of the tether to a first connector of the eyewear device; sending, by the first processor via the first transceiver of the eyewear device to the tether, a communication signal responsive to detection of the connection of the first mating connector; receiving, by the second processor via the second transceiver of the eyewear device from the tether, the communication signal; sending, by the second processor via the second transceiver to the tether, with a responsive communication signal; receiving, by the first processor via the first transceiver from the tether, the responsive communication; and processing, by the first processor, the responsive communication to identify proper installation of the tether to the eyewear device. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: notifying a user of the eyewear device of proper installation of the eyewear device. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the frame includes a bridge between the first edge and the second edge and wherein the communication and the responsive communication do not pass through the bridge.
