A vibration generating mechanism for a screen box includes a drive shaft arranged to be rotatably driven by a drive motor, at least one first eccentric out-of-balance weight fixed with respect to the drive shaft for rotation therewith and at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight coupled to the drive shaft via gearing. The first and second out-of-balance weights rotate in opposite directions when driven by the drive shaft.

The invention claimed is: 1. A screening machine comprising: a screen box; and a vibration generating mechanism for vibrating said screen box, said vibration generating mechanism comprising: a drive shaft that is rotatable about a rotational axis; at least one first eccentric out-of-balance weight fixed with respect to said drive shaft for rotation therewith; and at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight coupled to said drive shaft via gearing; wherein said gearing comprises: a drive gear fixed with respect to said drive shaft; a driven gear fixed with respect to said at least one second out-of-balance weight; and one or more idler gears for transferring drive from said drive gear and said driven gear, said one or more idler gears being arranged between said drive gear and said driven gear, wherein said one or more idler gears are mounted in a gear carrier; wherein said gear carrier is adjustably mounted with respect to said drive shaft to allow adjustment of an angular position of said gear carrier with respect to the rotational axis of said drive shaft to adjust a phase angle between said at least one first and second out-of-balance weights and wherein said gear carrier includes a manual operating device for rotating said gear carrier with respect to said drive shaft. 2. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein said manual operating device comprises a lever. 3. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein said at least one second out-of-balance weight is rotatably mounted on said drive shaft. 4. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein said gear carrier, said one or more idler gears and said at least one second out-of-balance weight are rotatable together with respect to the rotational axis of said drive shaft to adjust the phase angle. 5. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein said drive shaft is mounted within a tubular housing. 6. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein a respective pair of said first and second out-of-balance weights is located at each end of said drive shaft. 7. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein said gearing is lockable such that said at least one first and second out-of-balance weights rotate in the same direction as said drive shaft. 8. The screening machine of claim 7 , wherein said gear carrier is fixable with respect to said drive shaft to lock said gearing. 9. The screening machine of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least one first and second out-of-balance weights comprises an eccentrically mounted flywheel. 10. A screening machine comprising: a screen box that includes a screening deck; and a vibration generating mechanism for vibrating said screen box, said vibration generating mechanism comprising: a rotatable drive shaft; at least one first eccentric out-of-balance weight fixed with respect to said drive shaft for rotation therewith; and at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight coupled to said drive shaft via gearing; wherein a respective pair of said first and second out-of-balance weights is located at each end of said drive shaft. 11. The screening machine of claim 10 , wherein said screen box includes side walls and said screening deck is located between said side walls, and wherein said rotatable drive shaft extends between said side walls. 12. The screening machine of claim 11 , wherein said rotatable drive shaft is located within a tubular housing extending between said side walls of said screen box. 13. The screening machine of claim 10 , wherein said rotatable drive shaft is located beneath said screening deck. 14. The screening machine of claim 10 , wherein said at least one first eccentric out-of-balance weight and said at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight are located outside of said screen box. 15. A vibration generating mechanism comprising: a drive shaft that is rotatable about a rotational axis; at least one first eccentric out-of-balance weight fixed with respect to said drive shaft for rotation therewith; and at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight coupled to said drive shaft via gearing; wherein said gearing comprises: a drive gear fixed with respect to said drive shaft; a driven gear fixed with respect to said at least one second out-of-balance weight; and one or more idler gears for transferring drive from said drive gear and driven gear, said one or more idler gears being arranged between said drive gear and said driven gear, wherein said one or more idler gears are mounted in a gear carrier; wherein said gear carrier is adjustably mounted with respect to said drive shaft to allow adjustment of an angular position of said gear carrier with respect to the rotational axis of said drive shaft to adjust a phase angle between said at least one first and second out-of-balance weights; and wherein said gear carrier includes a manual operating device for rotating said gear carrier with respect to said drive shaft. 16. The mechanism of claim 15 , wherein said manual operating device comprises a lever. 17. The mechanism of claim 15 , wherein said gear carrier, said one or more idler gears, and said at least one second eccentric out-of-balance weight are rotatable together with respect to the rotational axis of said drive shaft to adjust the phase angle. 18. The mechanism of claim 15 , wherein in at least one mode of operation, said at least one first and second out-of-balance weights rotate in opposite directions when driven by said drive shaft. 19. The mechanism of claim 18 , wherein said drive gear, said driven gear, and said one or more idler gears comprise bevel gears.
