The door assembly may include at least one door panel and a door frame having a plurality of frame members including a header and a pair of side jambs. The invention may also be considered a frame member including a storage compartment. The frame member may include a core; and a top piece adjoining the core to form a structural member. The core and the top piece may be a composite of cellulosic material and at least one other material. The top piece may be a two-piece top piece and may include hollow cavities. Also disclosed are door jamb frame members and mullion frame members.

First claim

We claim: 1. A method for including component parts in a door assembly, comprising: layering a top piece on a core, dividing the top piece into a top piece cover and a top piece base, mating the top piece cover and the top piece base to be secured together in a first position, and the top piece cover is removable in a second position, the top piece having one or more hollow cavities, forming a channel in the core, including forming at least one opening in the channel, the opening extending from an interior side of said core through to the hollow cavities, forming a compartment space accessible between the top piece cover and the top piece base, wherein said compartment space is adapted to house the component parts. 2. The method of claim 1 including adding a trim profile to the door assembly. 3. The method of claim 1 including composing the door assembly of a decay resistant material. 4. The method of claim 1 including forming the top piece of a composite of cellulosic material and at least one other material. 5. The method of claim 1 including a stop portion and a rabbet portion, wherein said rabbet portion is generally L-shaped and a proximate end of said stop portion meets with a corresponding proximate end of said rabbet portion. 6. The method of claim 5 including overlapping a distal end of said rabbet portion over a side of the core. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the door assembly includes at least one frame member and the at least one frame member is a door jamb. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the door assembly includes at least one frame member and the at least one frame member is a mullion. 9. The method of claim 1 including adding a downwardly projecting outer leg, a mid leg, and an inner leg to the top piece cover. 10. The method of claim 9 including adding an upwardly projecting outer leg, a mid leg, and an inner leg to the top piece base. 11. The method of claim 10 including mating the outer leg of the top piece cover with the outer leg of the top piece base. 12. The method of claim 11 including mating the mid leg of the top piece cover with the mid leg of the top piece base. 13. The method of claim 12 including biasing the mid leg of the top piece cover and the mid leg of the top piece base to assist in securing the top piece cover to the top piece base. 14. The method of claim 13 including hooking the outer leg of the top piece cover around an outside of the outer leg of the top piece base. 15. The method of claim 1 wherein the door assembly includes at least one door frame member. 16. The method of claim 15 including accessing the storage compartment through the at least one frame member. 17. The method of claim 16 wherein said component parts includes electronics. 18. The method of claim 16 wherein said component parts includes lighting. 19. The method of claim 16 including the component parts in a door of the door assembly. 20. The method of claim 16 wherein the component parts include wireless interfaces.
