Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A level with a clip and removable end cap is provided. The end cap includes an outer member and locking member received within a clip that is affixed inside an end of the level. The locking member is inserted into the outer member pushing a moveable portion of the outer member into an engagement, such as a shearing engagement, that holds the end cap assembly in place relative to the level body. The clip includes a projection that interfaces with an aperture in the level frame.

What is claimed is: 1. A level comprising: an elongate frame comprising: an upper wall; a lower wall; a first sidewall extending between the upper wall and the lower wall; a second sidewall extending between the upper wall and the lower wall, the second sidewall spaced apart from and substantially parallel to the first sidewall; an interior passageway defined by interior surfaces of the upper wall, the lower wall, the first sidewall, and the second sidewall; and a frame aperture defined by the first sidewall near an end of the first sidewall; an orientation measuring component supported by the frame; and a clip comprising: a first wall; a second wall; and a projection extending from the first wall; wherein the projection is received within the frame aperture such that the projection extends past an outer surface of the first sidewall, when the clip is positioned within the interior passageway of the frame. 2. The level of claim 1 , wherein the frame aperture forms a polygonal shape. 3. The level of claim 2 , wherein the polygonal shape is a rectangle. 4. The level of claim 1 , wherein the projection defines a first surface substantially parallel to the first wall and spaced apart from the first wall by a first distance and a second surface adjacent to the first surface, the second surface substantially parallel to the first wall and spaced apart from the first wall by a second distance. 5. The level of claim 4 , wherein the first distance is greater than the second distance. 6. The level of claim 5 , wherein the projection further defines a third surface adjacent the second surface, such that the second surface separates the first surface from the third surface, the third surface substantially parallel to the first wall and spaced apart from the first wall by a third distance. 7. The level of claim 6 , wherein the third distance is greater than the second distance. 8. The level of claim 7 , wherein the third distance is equal to the first distance. 9. The level of claim 8 , wherein the first surface, the second surface, and the third surface are elongate surfaces, and wherein the second surface is positioned between a longitudinal end of the first surface and a longitudinal end of the third surface. 10. The level of claim 6 , further comprising a clip aperture defined within the first wall. 11. The level of claim 10 , wherein the clip aperture forms a circular shape having a diameter equal to the second distance. 12. A level comprising: a longitudinal axis; a frame defining a hollow cavity at an end of the frame, the frame comprising: an upper wall having an interior upper wall surface and an exterior upper wall surface; a lower wall, having an interior lower wall surface and an exterior lower wall surface; a first sidewall extending between the upper wall and the lower wall, the first sidewall having an interior first sidewall surface and an exterior first sidewall surface; and a second sidewall opposite the first sidewall, the second sidewall extending between the upper wall and the lower wall and having an interior second sidewall surface and an exterior second sidewall surface; an orientation measuring component supported by the frame; and a clip comprising: a first wall; a second wall; a clip aperture defined within the first wall; and a wall gripping projection extending from the first wall of the clip and through the first sidewall of the frame; wherein the first wall engages the interior first sidewall surface and the second wall engages the interior second sidewall surface when the clip is positioned within the hollow cavity at the end of the frame. 13. The level of claim 12 , further comprising an adhesive applied between the first wall and the interior first sidewall surface. 14. The level of claim 12 , further comprising a frame aperture defined within the first sidewall near a first end of the frame, wherein the wall gripping projection is configured to mate with the frame aperture when the clip is positioned within the hollow cavity at the end of the frame. 15. The level of claim 14 , wherein the wall gripping projection is coupled to the first wall by co-molding. 16. The level of claim 14 , wherein the wall gripping projection is coupled to the first wall by over-molding. 17. The level of claim 14 , further comprising an adhesive applied between the first wall and the interior first sidewall surface. 18. A level comprising: a frame comprising: a longitudinal axis; an upper wall; a lower wall; first and second opposing sidewalls that both extend between the upper wall and the lower wall; and a first frame aperture defined within the first sidewall; an orientation measuring component supported by the frame; and a clip comprising: a first wall; a second wall opposing the first wall; a base wall connecting the first and second walls; a first clip aperture defined within the first wall; and a first projection extending outwardly from the first wall that engages the first frame aperture. 19. The level of claim 18 , further comprising a second frame aperture defined within the second sidewall, a second clip aperture defined within the second wall, and a second projection extending outwardly from the second wall that engages the second frame aperture. 20. The level of claim 18 , wherein the first clip aperture is positioned between the base wall and the first projection.
