Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A sprayer includes a spray gun and a hopper. An air source provides compressed air to the sprayer to both eject fluid from the spray gun as a spray and to pressurize the hopper. The spray gun includes passages for providing compressed air to the nozzle for spraying and to the hopper for pressurizing the hopper. The spray gun further includes a relief valve for venting pressurized air from the hopper. The hopper receives the compressed air through a port in the hopper, and the compressed air assists the flow of material out of the hopper and into the spray gun.

The invention claimed is: 1. A sprayer configured to spray fluid, the sprayer comprising: a hopper configured to hold the fluid; and a spray gun configured to receive fluid from the hopper mounted to the spray gun and to spray the fluid onto a surface, wherein the spray gun comprises: a gun body; an air passage extending into the gun body, the air passage configured to receive a flow of pressurized air; a first air pathway fluidly connected to the air passage and extending at least partially through the gun body, the first air pathway configured to direct a first portion of the pressurized air downstream from the air passage; and a second air pathway fluidly connected to the air passage and extending at least partially through the gun body, the second air pathway configured to direct a second portion of the pressurized air to the hopper via an inlet to pressurize the hopper; and a relief valve pneumatically connected to the second air pathway at a location disposed upstream of the inlet; wherein the relief valve is configured to pneumatically connect an interior of the hopper to the atmosphere when the relief valve is in an open state, thereby venting the pressure within the hopper. 2. The sprayer of claim 1 , wherein the relief valve is mounted to the gun body. 3. The sprayer of claim 1 , further comprising: a pressure regulator mounted to the gun body to control a pressure of the second portion of the pressurized air downstream of the pressure regulator. 4. The sprayer of claim 3 , wherein the pressure regulator is adjustable to vary the pressure of the second portion of the pressurized air downstream of the pressure regulator. 5. The sprayer of claim 4 , wherein the pressure regulator is actuatable between a plurality of positions between a minimum flow state and a maximum flow state. 6. The sprayer of claim 5 , wherein the pressure regulator includes a knob configured to actuate the pressure regulator between the plurality of positions, wherein the knob is rotatable between a first position corresponding to the minimum flow state and a second position corresponding to the maximum flow state. 7. The sprayer of claim 6 , wherein the knob is configured to rotate 360-degrees between the first position and the second position. 8. The sprayer of claim 3 , wherein the relief valve is mounted to the gun body at a location downstream of the pressure regulator. 9. The sprayer of claim 1 , wherein: the gun body includes an aperture extending through the gun body; the relief valve includes a spool at least partially disposed in the aperture, the spool movable to actuate the relief valve between the open state, during which an exhaust path is opened through the aperture to exhaust air from the hopper, and a closed state, during which the exhaust path is pneumatically sealed. 10. The sprayer of claim 9 , wherein the aperture includes a first portion having a first diameter and a second portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, wherein a first sealing interface between the spool and the first portion is engaged with the relief valve in the closed state, and wherein a second sealing interface between the spool and the second portion is engaged with the relief valve in the closed state. 11. The sprayer of claim 10 , wherein the second sealing interface is engaged with the relief valve in the open state. 12. The sprayer of claim 11 , wherein the first sealing interface is disengaged with the relief valve in the open state. 13. The sprayer of claim 9 , wherein the spool comprises: a first end exposed on a first side of the gun body; a second end exposed on a second side of the gun body; a first seal extending around the first end; a second seal extending around the second end; wherein the spool and the aperture define a chamber within the gun body; and wherein the first seal pneumatically seals the chamber with the relief valve in the closed state, and the second seal interfaces with the gun body with the relief valve in each of the open state and the closed state. 14. The sprayer of claim 13 , wherein a diameter of the first seal is larger than a diameter of the second seal such that the pressurized airflow in the chamber exerts a larger force on the first seal than on the second seal. 15. The sprayer of claim 9 , wherein the relief valve further comprises: a spring disposed within the aperture and interfacing with the spool, the spring configured to bias the spool towards a position associated with the closed state. 16. A pressure relief valve for a sprayer having a hopper mounted to a spray gun, the pressure relief valve disposed in a portion of a pneumatic pathway formed at least partially within a gun body of the spray gun, the portion of the pneumatic pathway configured to provide compressed air to the hopper to pressurize the hopper, the pressure relief valve comprising: a spool disposed at least partially within an aperture extending at least partially through the gun body, the spool comprising: a first spool end exposed on a first end of the aperture; a second spool end exposed on a second end of the aperture; a first seal extending around the first spool end; a second seal extending around the second spool end; a spring interfacing with the spool and configured to bias the spool towards a closed position; wherein the spool and the aperture are configured to define a chamber within the gun body; wherein the spool pneumatically seals a chamber at least partially defined by the spool and the aperture when in the closed position, and the chamber is pneumatically connected to atmosphere with the spool in the open position; and wherein the first seal pneumatically seals the chamber at the first end of the aperture with the spool in the closed position and the second seal pneumatically seals the chamber at the second end of the aperture with the spool in each of the open position and the closed position. 17. The pressure relief valve of claim 16 , further comprising: a retainer disposed at the first end of the aperture, wherein the first seal pneumatically seals with the retainer with the spool in the closed position. 18. The pressure relief valve of claim 17 , wherein the spring interfaces with the retainer and with a flange projecting from the spool. 19. A sprayer configured to spray fluid, the sprayer comprising: a hopper configured to hold the fluid; and a spray gun configured to receive fluid from the hopper mounted to the spray gun and to spray the fluid onto a surface, wherein the spray gun comprises: a gun body; an air passage extending into the gun body, the air passage configured to receive a flow of pressurized air; a first air pathway fluidly connected to the air passage and extending at least partially through the gun body, the first air pathway configured to direct a first portion of the pressurized air downstream from the air passage; and a second air pathway fluidly connected to the air passage and extending at least partially through the gun body, the second air pathway configured to direct a second portion of the pressurized air to the hopper to pressurize the hopper; and a pressure regulator mounted to the gun body and configured to control a pressure of the second portion of the pressurized air downstream of the pressure regulator; wherein the pressure regulator adjustable to vary the pressure of the second portion downstream of the pressure regulator; wherein the pressure regulator includes a knob configured to actuate the pressure regulator between a
