A vacuum cleaner that includes a suction source configured to generate a suction airflow, a dirt collector in fluid communication with the suction source and configured to separate debris from the suction airflow and the dirt collector is configured to store the debris separated from the suction airflow. The vacuum further includes an infrared sensor operable to output a signal corresponding to a distance to an amount of debris stored in the dirt collector, a controller that receives the signal, and the controller is operable to determine a fill level stored in the dirt collector based on the signal. A visual display displays the fill level stored in the dirt collector.

What is claimed is: 1. A vacuum cleaner comprising: a suction source configured to generate a suction airflow; a dirt collector in fluid communication with the suction source and configured to separate debris from the suction airflow and the dirt collector configured to store the debris separated from the suction airflow; a first sensor operable to output a first signal corresponding to a pressure within the dirt collector; a second sensor operable to output a second signal corresponding to a distance between the second sensor and an amount of debris stored in the dirt collector; and a controller that receives the first and second signals, the controller operable to determine a fill level of the dirt collector based on the first and second signals. 2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor includes an infrared sensor and the first sensor includes an air pressure sensor. 3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the controller is operable to determine a first fill level based on the first sensor signal and a second fill level based on the second sensor signal, wherein the fill level of the dirt collector is the higher of the first and second fill levels. 4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the controller determines the fill level using a combination of the outputs from the first and second sensors. 5. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , further comprising a visual display located on the dirt collector, the visual display operable to display the fill level of the dirt collector determined by the controller. 6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 , wherein in the visual display includes a first end and a second end and the visual display includes an indicator that travels from the first end toward the second end as the dirt collector fill level increases. 7. The vacuum cleaner of claim 6 , wherein the indicator includes an array of light emitting diodes. 8. The vacuum cleaner of claim 6 , wherein the dirt collector includes a bottom end and a top end, wherein the first end of the visual display is adjacent the bottom end and the second end of the visual display is adjacent the top end. 9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 8 , wherein the dirt collector has a length measured from the bottom end to the top end, wherein the visual display includes a series of lights that extends along the length of the dirt collector. 10. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the visual display includes an array of light emitting diodes, and wherein an amount of light emitting diodes that are lit corresponds to the fill level of the dirt collector. 11. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the dirt collector includes a top end and a bottom end, wherein the second sensor is located adjacent the top end and faces toward the bottom end to sense the amount of debris stored in the dirt collector. 12. The vacuum cleaner of claim 11 , wherein the second sensor includes an infrared sensor. 13. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor includes an ultra-sonic sensor. 14. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor includes a camera. 15. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor utilizes sound waves. 16. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor is configured to sense opacity. 17. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the controller determines the fill level using an average of the outputs from the first and second sensors. 18. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the controller determines the fill level using a formula or look-up table to combine the first and second sensor outputs based on empirical or other information including sensor reliability, sensor accuracy, and system attributes. 19. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the dirt collector includes, a housing, and an air-permeable filter media extending from the housing such that the filter media and housing at least partially define a collection volume, the housing having an inlet opening in fluid communication with the volume, and at least a portion of the housing is transmissive of infrared radiation. 20. The vacuum cleaner of claim 19 , wherein the portion of the housing that is transmissive of infrared radiation is translucent or transparent.
