Official abstract text for this publication.
The present disclosure provides details of a system and method for detecting and monitoring a contraband device including communication devices and drones/UAVs by utilizing a combination of mobile devices, fixed monitoring devices, and a contraband monitoring center. The mobile devices include smart phones or tablets that are borrowed, rented, or purchased by an inmate from a correctional facility. These mobile devices are configured to detect, monitor, and intervene in the communications of target devices. Further, the mobile devices are configured to communicate with fixed monitoring devices located throughout the correctional facility in performing intervention operations. The contraband monitoring center may also be utilized in the coordination, monitoring, and intervention of target devices.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for detecting and monitoring an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a facility, the system comprising: a detection device located at an outer perimeter of the facility; and a contraband monitoring center, wherein the detection device is configured to: perform a search for any unauthorized devices; detect the UAV attempting to enter air space of the facility; generate an alert indicating the UAV has been detected; transmit the alert to the contraband monitoring center; and determine whether instructions have been received from the contraband monitoring center; wherein the contraband monitoring center is configured to: receive the alert from the detection device; and determine an intervention plan for intervening with the UAV, wherein the detection device is further configured to activate an intervention operation associated with the intervention plan until a predetermined event occurs. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the intervention operation comprises launching one or more objects at the UAV using a projectile launcher or intercepting the UAV using a capture drone. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined event comprises a lapse of a predetermined time since the intervention operation began or motion information indicating that the UAV has moved away from the air space of the facility. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection device includes one or more directional antennas that are pointed towards the facility or away from the facility and configured to detect the UAV. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection device includes one or more omnidirectional antennas configured to detect the UAV by intercepting a Global Positioning System (GPS) signal of the UAV. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection device includes one or more infrared cameras configured to detect heat patterns of the UAV. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detection device includes one or more microphone elements configured to detect the UAV by tuning into an audio frequency of a propeller system in the UAV. 8. A method for detecting and monitoring an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a facility, the method comprising: performing a search for any unauthorized devices using a detection device; detecting, by the detection device, the UAV attempting to enter air space of the facility; generating an alert indicating the UAV has been detected; transmitting the alert to a contraband monitoring center; and determining that instructions for intervening with the UAV have been received from the contraband monitoring center in response to the alert; and activating an intervention operation according to the instructions until a predetermined event occurs. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the activating the intervention operation comprises: launching one or more objects at the UAV using a projectile launcher or intercepting the UAV using a capture drone. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the predetermined event comprises a lapse of a predetermined time since the intervention operation began or motion information indicating that the UAV has moved away from the air space of the facility. 11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the detecting the UAV further comprises: detecting the UAV by using one or more microphone elements to tune into an audio frequency of a propeller system in the UAV. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the detecting the UAV further comprises: detecting the UAV by intercepting a Global Positioning System (GPS) signal of the UAV. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the detecting the UAV further comprises: detecting the UAV by using one or more infrared cameras configured to detect heat patterns of the UAV. 14. A detection device for detecting a presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a facility, the detection device comprising: at least one processor configured to: perform a search for any unauthorized devices; detect the UAV attempting to enter air space of the facility; generate an alert indicating the UAV has been detected; transmit the alert to a contraband monitoring center; and determine that instructions for intervening with the UAV have been received from the contraband monitoring center in response to the alert; and activate an intervention operation according to the instructions until a predetermined event occurs. 15. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the intervention operation comprises launching one or more objects at the UAV using a projectile launcher or intercepting the UAV using a capture drone. 16. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the predetermined event comprises a lapse of a predetermined time since the intervention operation began or motion information indicating that the UAV has moved away from the air space of the facility. 17. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the detection device includes one or more directional antennas that are pointed towards the facility or away from the facility and configured to detect the UAV. 18. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the detection device includes one or more omnidirectional antennas configured to detect the UAV by intercepting a Global Positioning System (GPS) signal of the UAV. 19. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the detection device includes one or more infrared cameras configured to detect heat patterns of the UAV. 20. The detection device of claim 14 , wherein the detection device includes one or more microphone elements configured to detect the UAV by tuning into an audio frequency of a propeller system in the UAV.
