The invention relates to biodegradable iron alloy-containing compositions for use in preparing medical devices. In addition, biodegradable crystalline and amorphous compositions of the invention exhibit properties that make them suitable for use as medical devices for implantation into a body of a patient. The compositions include elemental iron and one or more elements selected from manganese, magnesium, zirconium, zinc and calcium. The compositions can be prepared using a high energy milling technique. The resulting compositions and the devices formed therefrom are useful in various surgical procedures, such as but not limited to orthopedic, craniofacial and cardiovascular.

The invention claimed is: 1. A biodegradable iron-based metal alloy, consisting of: from 0.04 to 0.79 weight percent magnesium; from 27.79 to 27.98 weight percent zirconium; from 0.64 to 0.65 weight percent calcium; and a remainder of iron, wherein the metal alloy is biodegradable and structurally amorphous. 2. A biodegradable medical device comprising the iron-based alloy of claim 1 . 3. The device of claim 2 , wherein said device is selected from the group consisting of plate, mesh, staple, screw, pin, tack, rod, suture anchor, tubular mesh, coil, x-ray marker, catheter, pipe, shield, bolt, clip, plug, dental implant, graft device, endoprosthesis, bone-fracture healing device, bone replacement device, joint replacement device, tissue regeneration device, cardiovascular stent, nerve guide, surgical implant, surgical wire and combinations thereof. 4. The device of claim 2 , wherein said device is an implantable device. 5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the implantable device is selected from the group consisting of an orthopedic device, a craniofacial device and a cardiovascular device.
