Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A resistance weld shielding control system includes a computer that is executed to control a fixture to receive and hold at least one part to be welded. The computer also controls one or more electrodes to apply electrical energy to the part for welding the at least one part, and controls a gas delivery system to direct an inert gas onto the part for shielding the part from the ambient atmosphere via a nozzle. The nozzle is configured in the fixture such that the fixture holds the nozzle in a fixed physical relationship to the part.

What is claimed is: 1. A weld shielding control system, comprising: a control circuit comprising at least one memory for storing instructions that when executed by at least one processor, is executed to: identify a fixture from among multiple fixtures, each of the fixtures being configured to receive and hold at least one part; obtain from at least one memory one of multiple welding profile records stored in the at least one memory, each of the welding profile records being associated with a different one of fixtures, the obtained welding profile record being the welding profile record associated with the identified fixture, each of the welding profile records setting forth weld parameters that are different for different weld profile records; control at least one electrode to apply electrical energy to the at least one part held by the identified fixture so as to weld the at least one part held by the identified fixture; and control a gas delivery system to direct an inert gas onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture so as to shield the at least one part held by the identified fixture from the ambient atmosphere when the at least one part held by the identified fixture is being welded, the gas delivery system being controlled according to the weld parameters set forth in the obtained welding profile record. 2. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the weld parameters set forth in the obtained welding profile record specify a period of time during which the inert gas is to be directed onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture before the electrical energy is applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture. 3. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the weld parameters set forth in the obtained welding profile record specify a period of time during which the inert gas is to be directed onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture after the electrode has finished applying electrical energy to the at least one part held by the identified fixture. 4. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the obtained weld profile record includes at least one of a pre-weld profile segment, a welding profile segment, and a post-weld profile segment. 5. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the identified fixture includes a first member and a second member, the first member having a slot formed in a first surface, the first member being positioned adjacent to the second member such that the slot and the second member define a channel in the identified fixture, the channel coupling a nozzle to a gas supply line coupling. 6. The weld shielding control system of claim 5 , wherein the slot in the first surface and a second surface of the second member define the channel. 7. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein one or more nozzle are configured in the identified fixture, each of the one or more nozzle directing the inert gas at different regions around the at least one part. 8. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is configured to apply the electrical energy to the at least one part held by the identified fixture so as to weld the at least one part held by the identified fixture using a resistance welding technique. 9. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the weld parameters in different welding profile records set forth different amounts of time that the inert gas flow is to be applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture as the electrical energy is applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture. 10. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the weld parameters in different welding profile records set forth different flowrates of the inert gas that is applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture as the electrical energy is applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture. 11. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the control of the at least one electrode applies the electrical energy so as to weld the at least one part held by the identified fixture according to the weld parameters set forth in the obtained welding profile record. 12. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the weld parameters in different welding profile records set forth different times for how long the at least one part is to receive the electrical energy from the at least one electrode. 13. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein different fixtures are associated with different codes and, wherein identifying the fixture from among the multiple fixtures includes reading a code from the identified fixture. 14. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one part held by the fixtures is different for different fixtures. 15. The weld shielding control system of claim 1 , wherein each of the fixtures includes a nozzle configured such that the fixture holds the nozzle in a fixed physical relationship to the at least one part held by the fixture. 16. A method comprising: identifying, using instructions stored in at least one memory and executed by at least one processor, a fixture from among multiple fixtures, each of the fixtures being configured to receive and hold at least one part; obtaining from at least one memory one of multiple welding profile records stored in the at least one memory, each of the welding profile records being associated with a different one of fixtures, the obtained welding profile record being the welding profile record associated with the identified fixture, each of the welding profile records setting forth weld parameters that are different for different weld profile records; controlling, using the instructions, at least one electrode to apply electrical energy to the at least one part held by the identified fixture so as to weld the at least one part held by the identified fixture; and controlling, using the instructions, a gas delivery system to direct an inert gas onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture so as to shield the at least one part held by the identified fixture from the ambient atmosphere when the at least one part held by the identified fixture is being welded, the gas delivery system being controlled according to the weld parameters set forth in the obtained welding profile record. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: controlling the gas delivery system to direct the inert gas onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture for a specified period of time before the electrical energy is applied to the at least one part held by the identified fixture. 18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: controlling the gas delivery system to direct the inert gas onto the at least one part held by the identified fixture for a specified period of time after the electrode has finished applying electrical energy to the at least one part held by the identified fixture.
