Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A receptacle for detecting delivery and retrieval events has a door sensor, an item sensor, a scanner, and a control unit for operating the sensors, and transmitting the sensor information for processing and analysis. A system can determine whether an event was a delivery or retrieval event based on sensor information and item tracking information. A system can further include an item configured to interact with a computing device.

We claim: 1. A method for using an item receptacle, comprising: detecting, in a processor, a signal from an item sensor located on the item receptacle, the item receptacle having a plurality of sides enclosing an internal volume, a door comprising a door state sensor, and the item sensor; detecting, in the processor, a door open signal from the door state sensor; determining, in the processor, whether an item delivery or pick up event has occurred based on the detected door open signal and the detected item sensor signal; receiving, at the processor, location and time information from a delivery device associated with a delivery resource assigned to deliver the item; detecting a time of the door open signal; determining that a delivery event occurred based on the location and time information from the delivery device in conjunction with the time of the door open signal; causing a notification of the delivery event to be sent to a recipient of the item; and causing a notification that the pickup event has occurred to be sent to a sender of the item. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the item sensor comprises an emitter configured to emit a beam of electromagnetic radiation and a detector, and the signal from the item sensor comprises a change in state of the beam. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the item delivery event is determined when the beam changes from an uninterrupted state prior to a door open event to an interrupted state following a door open event. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the item pickup event is determined when the beam changes from an interrupted state prior to a door open event to an uninterrupted state following a door open event. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the item sensor comprises a scanner configured to read a computer readable code on the item within the internal volume, and wherein the signal from the item sensor comprises information indicative of the computer readable code read by the scanner. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the delivery event is determined when a scanner reads no computer readable code prior to the door open signal being received, and reads a computer readable code after the door open signal is received. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pick-up event is determined when a scanner reads the computer readable code prior to the door open signal being received, and reads no computer readable code after the door open signal is received. 8. A method for using an item receptacle, comprising: detecting, in a processor, a signal from an item sensor located on the item receptacle, the item receptacle having a plurality of sides enclosing an internal volume, a door comprising a door state sensor, and the item sensor; detecting, in the processor, a door open signal from the door state sensor; determining, in the processor, whether an item delivery or pick up event has occurred based on the detected door open signal and the detected item sensor signal; receiving, at the processor, location and time information from a delivery device associated with a delivery resource assigned to deliver the item; detecting a time of the door open signal; determining that a delivery event occurred based on the location and time information from the delivery device in conjunction with the time of the door open signal; and causing a notification of the delivery event to be sent to a recipient of the item. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the item sensor comprises an emitter configured to emit a beam of electromagnetic radiation and a detector, and the signal from the item sensor comprises a change in state of the beam. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the item delivery event is determined when the beam changes from an uninterrupted state prior to a door open event to an interrupted state following the door open event. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the item pickup event is determined when the beam changes from an interrupted state prior to a door open event to an uninterrupted state following the door open event. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the item receptacle further comprises a scanner, wherein the item delivery event is determined when the scanner reads no computer readable code prior to the door open signal being received, and reads a computer readable code after the door open signal is received. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the item pick-up event is determined when the scanner reads the computer readable code prior to when the door open signal being received, and reads no computer readable code after the door open signal is received. 14. A system, comprising: an item receptacle comprising: a plurality of sides enclosing an internal volume; a door configured to open and close to allow and deny access to the internal volume; means for detecting a change in state of the door; means for sensing the presence of an item; means for detecting a signal from an item sensor located on the item receptacle; and means for determining whether an item delivery or pick up event has occurred based on a detected change in the state of the door and a detected presence of the item; and means for receiving location and time information from a delivery device associated with a delivery resource assigned to deliver the item; means for detecting a time of the door open signal; means for determining that the delivery event occurred based on the location and time information from the delivery device in conjunction with the time of the door open signal; means for causing a notification of the delivery event to be sent to a recipient of the item; and means for causing notification that the pick up event has occurred to be sent to sender. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the means for detecting the change in the state of the door comprises an electromagnetic sensing system. 16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the means for sensing the presence of the item comprises a scanner. 17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the means for detecting the signal from the item sensor located on the item receptacle comprises an emitter and a detector. 18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the means for determining whether the item delivery or pick up event has occurred comprises a processor. 19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the means for causing the notification of the delivery event to be sent to the recipient of the item comprises a wireless communication device configured to communicate with an identifier tag on the item disposed within the item receptacle.
