Disclosed are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for shared folder backed integrated workspaces. In some implementations, a content management system can provide a graphical user interface (GUI) that integrates communications and content management into a single user interface. The user interface can include mechanisms that allow a user to provide input to generate a new workspace. The user interface can provide a mechanism to allow a user to view conversations related to the workspace and/or content items associated with the workspace. The user interface can present representations of content items associated with the workspace and allow the user to provide input to generate, view, edit, and share content items associated with the workspace.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: generating, by a content management system, a workspace graphical user interface (GUI) that provides an integrated environment for manipulating content items in a shared folder of the content management system and communicating with authorized users of the shared folder, wherein each authorized user device includes a local folder stored thereon, the local folder synchronized with the shared folder, the workspace GUI including representations of the content items stored in the shared folder and a chat message stream that includes chat messages generated by the authorized users of the shared folder; providing, by the content management system, the workspace GUI to a first authorized user device associated with a first authorized user; receiving, by the content management system via the workspace GUI, a request from the first authorized user device to create a new content item, the request specifying a content item type for the new content item, the request comprising a user interaction with a graphical element displayed in the workspace GUI; selecting, by the content management system, a content item template from a plurality of content item templates associated with the specified content item type; generating, bythe content management system, a copy of the selected content item template; saving, by the content management system, the copy of the selected content item template as the new content item in the shared folder, wherein the new content item is accessible to the first authorized user and the authorized users; responsive to the generating, automatically synchronizing, by the content management system, the new content item with a local file system of the first authorized user device associated with the first authorized user and local file systems of authorized devices associated with the authorized users; and providing, via the workspace GUI, a first user-selectable option to open the new content item in a native application, a second user-selectable option to add the new content item to the chat message stream for discussion among the authorized users, and a third user-selectable option to view an editable preview image of the new content item in the workspace GUI. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: in response to saving the new content item in the shared folder, sending, by the content management system, the new content item to the first authorized user device. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of content item templates is of a different content item type. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: renaming, by the content management system, the new content item based on a name specified in the request for the new content item. 5. The method of claim 1 , comprising: receiving by the content management system a second request to open the copy of the selected content item template; and providing a prompt to the first authorized user device with selectable options to open the copy of the selected content item template in the native application or in a web browser. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: upon determining, by the content management system, that the first authorized user specified the native application, invoking the native application compatible with the content item type associated with the new content item; and transmitting, by the content management system, the new content item to the first authorized user device for display via the native application. 7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to: generate, by a content management system, a workspace graphical user interface (GUI) that provides an integrated environment for manipulating content items in a shared folder of the content management system and communicating with authorized users of the shared folder, wherein each authorized user device includes a local folder stored thereon, the local folder synchronized with the shared folder, the workspace GUI including representations of the content items stored in the shared folder and a chat message stream that includes chat messages generated by the authorized users of the shared folder; provide, by the content management system, the workspace GUI to a first authorized user device associated with a first authorized user; receive, by the content management system via the workspace GUI, a request from a web browser running on the first authorized user device to create a new content item, the request specifying a content item type for the new content item, the request comprising a user interaction with a graphical element displayed in the workspace GUI; select, by the content management system, a content item template from a plurality of content item templates associated with the specified content item type; generate, by the content management system, a copy of the selected content item template; save, by the content management system, the copy of the selected content item template as the new content item in the shared folder, wherein the new content item is accessible to the first authorized user and the authorized users; responsive to saving the new content item, synchronize, by the content management system, the new content item with a local file system of the first authorized user device associated with the first authorized user and local file systems of authorized devices associated with the authorized users; and provide, via the workspace GUI, a first user-selectable option to open the new content item in a native application, a second user-selectable option to add the new content item to the chat message stream for discussion among the authorized users, and a third user-selectable option to view an editable preview image of the new content item in the workspace GUI. 8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to: in response to saving the new content item in the shared folder, send, by the content management system, the new content item to the first authorized user device. 9. The non-transitory computer-reada ble medium of claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of content item templates is of a different content item type. 10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the request specifies a name for the new content item, and wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to: rename, by the content management system, the new content item based on the specified name. 11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , further comprising: upon determining, by the content management system, that the first authorized user specified the native application, invoking the native application compatible with the content item type associated with the new content item; and transmitting, by the content management system, the new content item to the first authorized user device for display via the native application. 12. A content management system comprising: one or more processors; and a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the content management system to: generate, by the content management system, a workspace graphical user interface (GUI) that provides an integrated environment for manipulating content items in a shared folder of the content management system and communicating with authorized users of the shared folder, wherein each authorized user device includes a local folder stored thereon, the local fol
