Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A structural reinforcement for a vehicle comprising: a) a carrier having a base wall from which a plurality of projections extend, the plurality of projections including at least one first projection and at least one second projection and the at least one first projection having a height greater than a height of the at least one second projection; b) an activatable material which is heat activatable and affixed to the carrier, configured to secure the carrier in a cavity of the vehicle; wherein in event of an impact, the at least one first projection and second projection are configured to deform toward the base wall and/or in a direction of an impact load in response to the impact load; and the at least one first projection is configured to receive the impact load and deform before the at least one second projection receives the impact load and deforms.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A structural reinforcement comprising: a) a carrier having: i) a base wall; ii) a first set of projections extending from the base wall; iii) a second set of projections extending from the base wall, wherein a height of the first set of projections is greater than a height of the second set of projections; iv) an opening extending through the carrier; and v) a fastener connected to the carrier and adapted to affix the structural reinforcement to a vehicle structure, wherein the fastener is formed separate from the carrier and affixed to the carrier; and b) an activatable material affixed to at least a portion of the carrier adjacent to and at least partially abutting the first set of projections or the second set of projections, wherein the activatable material is free of contact with the opening prior to activation. 2. The structural reinforcement of claim 1 , wherein the first set of projections and the second set of projections extend from the base wall in the same direction. 3. The structural reinforcement of claim 2 , wherein the first set of projections form a cell-like structure and the second set of projections form a cell-like structure, and the one or more openings of the carrier are positioned in the cell-like structure formed from the first set of projections. 4. The structural reinforcement of claim 3 , wherein the at least one fastener is a snap-fit fastener located on a periphery of the first set of projections that is adapted to engage an edge surface of the opening of the cavity; and wherein the opening of the cavity is located on the intermediate panel. 5. The structural reinforcement of claim 4 , wherein the first set of projections is located adjacent to the second set of projections and within the confines of the carrier formed by an outer perimeter of the carrier. 6. The structural reinforcement of claim 3 , wherein a perimeter of the second set of projections is at least partially surrounded by the activatable material. 7. The structural reinforcement of claim 3 , wherein the cavity includes a first cavity and a second cavity, and the first cavity and the second cavity are separated by the intermediate panel; and wherein the first set of projections define a first portion that is configured upon installation to project through the intermediate panel toward and into the first cavity so that the first portion reinforces the first cavity. 8. The structural reinforcement of claim 7 , wherein the second set of projections define a second portion that is configured upon installation to reinforce the second cavity. 9. The structural reinforcement of claim 8 , wherein the first portion extends substantially orthogonal to the intermediate panel. 10. The structural reinforcement of claim 9 , wherein the at least one fastener is integrally formed with the carrier and not formed separate from the carrier. 11. The structural reinforcement of claim 10 , wherein a thickness of the base wall is different than a thickness of one or more projections of the first set of projections, a thickness of the base wall is different than a thickness of one or more projections of the second set of projections, or both. 12. The structural reinforcement of claim 11 , wherein one or more projections of the first set of projections have a different thickness, one or more projections of the second set of projections have a different thickness, or both. 13. The structural reinforcement of claim 12 , wherein the activatable material is an expandable material and is substantially C-shaped. 14. A structural reinforcement adapted to reinforce a cavity including a first cavity portion and an adjacent second cavity portion of an automotive vehicle, the first cavity portion and the second cavity portion being defined by spaced apart outer panels and an intermediate panel that has an opening through it and that is located therebetween separating the first cavity portion and the second cavity portion, the structural reinforcement comprising: a) a carrier having: i) a base wall; ii) a first set of projections extending generally orthogonally along their length from the base wall and defining a first carrier portion that is configured upon installation into the second cavity portion to project through the intermediate panel opening toward and into the first cavity portion to reinforce the first cavity portion; iii) a second set of projections extending from the base wall and defining a second carrier portion that is configured upon installation to reinforce the second cavity portion, wherein a height of the first carrier portion relative to the base wall is greater than a height of the second carrier portion; iv) one or more openings located along the second carrier portion and extending through the carrier, wherein the first carrier portion is adapted to have a smaller cross-sectional area than the intermediate panel opening so that the one or more openings of the carrier remain exposed by the intermediate panel to allow fluid to flow through the first cavity portion, the intermediate panel opening, the second cavity portion, and the structural reinforcement; and v) at least one fastener integrally formed with the carrier that is adapted to affix the structural reinforcement to the intermediate panel; and vi) an activatable material affixed to at least a portion of the carrier adjacent to and at least partially abutting the first carrier portion or the second carrier portion, wherein the activatable material is free of contact with the one or more openings of the carrier prior to activation. 15. The structural reinforcement of claim 14 , wherein one or more projections of the first set of projections have a different thickness, one or more projections of the second set of projections have a different thickness, or both; and wherein the first carrier portion is located adjacent to the second carrier portion and within the confines of the carrier formed by an outer perimeter of the carrier. 16. The structural reinforcement of claim 15 , wherein the at least one fastener is adapted to affix the structural reinforcement along an edge surface of the intermediate panel opening. 17. A structural reinforcement adapted to reinforce a cavity including a first cavity portion and an adjacent second cavity portion of an automotive vehicle, the first cavity portion and the second cavity portion being defined by spaced apart outer panels and an intermediate panel that has an opening through it and that is located therebetween separating the first cavity portion and the second cavity portion, the structural reinforcement comprising: a) a carrier having: i) a base wall; ii) a first set of projections extending generally orthogonally along their length from the base wall and defining a first carrier portion having a peripheral wall structure that is configured upon installation into the second cavity portion to project through the intermediate panel opening toward and into the first cavity portion to reinforce the first cavity portion; iii) a second set of projections extending from the base wall and defining a second carrier portion that is configured upon installation to reinforce the second cavity portion, wherein a height of the first carrier portion relative to the base wall is greater than a height of the second carrier portion; iv) one or more openings located along the second carrier portion and extending through the carrier, wherein the first carrier portion is adapted to have a smaller cross-sectional area than the intermediate panel opening so that the one or
