Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An adjustable square has a blade including a scale, a body, a slot formed in the body for movably receiving the blade, a locking mechanism operably engaged with the body for releasably securing the blade within the slot, and an indexing member operably engaged with the body and operably engaged with the blade. The indexing member indexes the body at precise locations along the blade. A method for indexing an adjustable square is also provided. The method includes positioning a body of the adjustable square at a precise known position and indexing, with an indexing member of the adjustable square, the body of the adjustable square at the precise known position.

The invention claimed is: 1. An adjustable square comprising: a blade with measurement indicia; a body with a bore; a slot formed in the body for movably receiving the blade; a locking mechanism operably engaged with the body for releasably securing the blade within the slot; and an indexing pin operably engaged and retained within the bore of the body for releasably securing the blade at one discrete location from at least two discrete locations formed in the blade independently of the locking mechanism; and wherein the indexing pin is moveable between a released position and a depressed position relative to the blade; wherein when the indexing pin is provided in the released position, the indexing pin is disengaged from the blade; and wherein when the indexing pin is provided in the depressed position, the indexing pin is one of engaged inside of the blade at one discrete location from the at least two discrete locations and outside of the blade remote from the at least two discrete locations. 2. The adjustable square of claim 1 , further comprising: a top surface of the blade, wherein when the indexing pin is in the released position the indexing pin is entirely above the top surface of the blade, and when the indexing pin is in the depressed position a portion of the indexing is below the top surface of the blade but above a bottom surface of the blade. 3. The adjustable square of claim 1 , wherein the blade comprises: a first end; a second end opposite to the first end; and a groove formed in the blade extending between the first end and the second end; wherein when the indexing pin engages with the blade inside of the groove, the indexing pin is not slidable within the bore. 4. The adjustable square of claim 3 , wherein the indexing pin moves within the bore in an axial manner. 5. The adjustable square of claim 4 , wherein the indexing pin is retained within the bore in both the released position and the depressed position. 6. The adjustable square of claim 4 , wherein the indexing pin further comprises: a spring cap located at a first end of the bore; and a spring operative to control axial movement of the indexing pin within the bore. 7. The adjustable square of claim 6 , wherein the indexing pin includes a first end and second end and a tapered region at the second end with a first diameter closer to the first end and a second diameter closer to the second end and the second diameter is less than the first diameter. 8. The adjustable square of claim 6 , further comprising: a larger diameter region of the indexing pin below the spring cap operative to retain indexing pin within the bore through interfacing of the larger diameter region with the spring cap. 9. The adjustable square of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of indexing apertures are along a length of the blade corresponding to the measurement indicia. 10. The adjustable square of claim 9 , wherein the indexing pin passes over at least a portion of one of the plurality of indexing apertures; and wherein the indexing pin operably engages the blade. 11. The adjustable square of claim 1 , further comprising: a spring operative to move the indexing pin along an axis. 12. The adjustable square of claim 11 , wherein the spring is operative to move the indexing pin into engagement with the blade when depressed. 13. The adjustable square of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises: a front region; a rear region; a first side region at a right angle to the front region and rear region; and a second side region at an acute angle with respect to front region and an obtuse angle with respect to the rear region. 14. The adjustable square of claim 13 , further comprising: a sliding tab body of a sliding tab assembly; a locking pin of the sliding tab assembly operably engaged with the sliding tab body and the body; and a restrictor of the sliding tab assembly operably engaged with the sliding tab body; wherein the sliding tab body is operative to move within a channel within the body and the sliding tab body is adapted to support the adjustable square when retained on a workpiece. 15. A method for indexing an adjustable square comprising: positioning a body of the adjustable square at a precise known position along a blade of the adjustable square; aligning at least one discrete indexing aperture of a plurality of discrete indexing apertures formed in the blade with an indexed bore formed in the body; operably engaging a portion of the blade with a portion of an indexing pin to fix the body at the precise known position inside the at least one discrete indexing aperture; and indexing, with the indexing pin of the adjustable square, the body of the adjustable square at the precise known position. 16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising: wherein positioning further includes: disengaging a locking mechanism from a locked position to an unlocked position; disconnecting a clamping member from the blade; and moving the body with respect to the blade or the blade with respect to the body. 17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising: reengaging a locking mechanism to a locked position from an unlocked position; and preventing movement of the body with respect to the blade or the blade with respect to the body. 18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising: depressing the indexing pin in an axial manner to engage with a single aperture of the blade. 19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising: overcoming a spring biasing force applied by a spring located in the indexed bore and in operative contact with the indexing pin in order to depress the indexing pin in an axial manner.
