Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method for quantitatively assessing a press fit value (and provide a mechanism to evaluate optimal quantitative values) of any implant/bone interface regardless the variables involved including bone site preparation, material properties of bone and implant, implant geometry and coefficient of friction of the implant-bone interface without requiring a visual positional assessment of a depth of insertion. The following description is presented to enable one of ordinary skill in the art to make and use the invention and is provided in the context of a patent application and its requirements.

What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent of the United States is: 1. A method for an installation of an acetabular cup into a sculpted cavity in a portion of bone, the acetabular cup including an irregularly-profiled exterior surface defining a generally hemispherical interior cavity with the installation configured to impart a desired orientation profile to the acetabular cup within the sculpted cavity subsequent to the installation, comprising: preparing the sculpted cavity in the portion of bone, said sculpted cavity defining an irregularly-profiled cavity volume, said irregularly-profiled cavity volume complementary to the irregularly-profiled exterior surface; and installing the acetabular cup into the sculpted cavity; wherein a composite of the irregularly-profiled cavity volume and said irregularly-profiled exterior shell cooperatively defines a unique orientation key producing the desired orientation profile for the acetabular cup when installed into the irregularly-profiled cavity. 2. A method preparing a set of elements for an installation of an implant into a prepared cavity of a portion of bone, the installation including a desired orientation profile for the implant within the prepared cavity after the installation, comprising: a) establishing, pre-operatively, the desired orientation profile; b) producing the implant having a body defining a body portion configured for fixation within the prepared cavity, said body portion including a body keying structure; and c) producing the prepared cavity having an interior wall surface defining a cavity portion configured for receiving said body portion, said cavity portion including a cavity keying structure complementary to said body keying structure; wherein a composite of said keying structures cooperatively produce the desired orientation profile for the implant by defining a unique key imparting the desired orientation profile when said body portion is fixated within said cavity portion. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said a) establishing the desired orientation profile includes imaging the portion of bone using one or more of a scanning technology selected from the group consisting of a CT, an MRI, an Xray, an ultrasound, or combinations thereof. 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said b) producing the implant includes selecting a particular implant from a premanufactured set of non-custom-manufactured implants as the implant, said particular implant including a predetermined body keying structure. 5. The method of claim 3 wherein said b) producing the implant includes manufacturing additively the implant including a custom body keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile. 6. The method of claim 3 wherein said cavity keying structure includes a predetermined cavity keying structure without customization of said cavity keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile wherein said c) producing the prepared cavity includes preparing the portion of bone with said predetermined cavity keying structure. 7. The method of claim 3 wherein said cavity keying structure includes a custom cavity keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile wherein said c) producing the prepared cavity includes preparing the portion of bone with said custom cavity keying structure. 8. The method of claim 2 wherein said b) producing the implant includes selecting a particular implant from a premanufactured set of non-custom-manufactured implants as the implant, said particular implant including a predetermined body keying structure. 9. The method of claim 2 wherein said b) producing the implant includes manufacturing additively the implant including a custom body keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile. 10. The method of claim 2 wherein said cavity keying structure includes a predetermined cavity keying structure without customization of said cavity keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile wherein said c) producing the prepared cavity includes preparing the portion of bone with said predetermined cavity keying structure. 11. The method of claim 2 wherein said cavity keying structure includes a custom cavity keying structure responsive to the desired orientation profile wherein said c) producing the prepared cavity includes preparing the portion of bone with said custom cavity keying structure.
