Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hard hat with symmetric front and back mounting ridges to support a headlamp is described. The hard hat provides mounting ridges to receive insertion slots of a rigid mounting bracket that fit around the ridges. The rigid mounting bracket includes channels to loop a strap through the channels and support a lamp on the bracket. The strap may include a hook and loop fastener system to enable attachment of a variety of lamps to the rigid support bracket. In this way, the hard hat can support a wide variety of headlamps attached to the rigid mounting bracket without destructive alterations to the hard hat. Clips may be added to the rigid mounting bracket to secure or lock the bracket in place during operation and prevent accidental knocks or jarring of the headlamp.

I claim: 1. A hard hat, comprising: an outer shell comprising: an exterior surface; an interior surface defining a cavity configured to receive a head of an operator; a crown segment comprising a front side and a rear side, the crown segment configured to cover part of the head of the operator, wherein a bottom portion of the crown segment defines a lower circumference along the exterior surface of the outer shell; and a brim extending radially outward from at least a portion of the lower circumference; and a first auxiliary mounting ridge coupled to a lateral side of the bottom portion of the crown segment, the first auxiliary mounting ridge comprising: a first end; a second end opposing the first end, the first end and the second end positioned along the lateral side of the bottom portion of the crown segment between the front side and the rear side of the crown segment; and a plurality of mounting slots positioned along the first auxiliary mounting ridge between the first end and the second end. 2. The hard hat of claim 1 , further including a front mounting ridge, the front mounting ridge positioned on the front side of the crown segment adjacent to the first end of the first auxiliary mounting ridge. 3. The hard hat of claim 2 , the front mounting ridge including: a right edge protruding outwardly from the front mounting ridge; a left edge opposing the right edge and protruding outwardly from the front mounting ridge; and a detent positioned between the right edge and the left edge and configured to interface with a mounting bracket. 4. The hard hat of claim 3 , the right edge and left edge of the front mounting ridge each extending toward the bottom portion of the crown segment, wherein the right edge and left edge each include a portion with an increased width as the right edge and left edge approach the bottom portion of the crown segment. 5. The hard hat of claim 2 , further including a plurality of openings positioned on the front mounting ridge and extending through the outer shell. 6. The hard hat of claim 2 , further including a rear mounting ridge, the rear mounting ridge positioned on a rear side of the crown segment opposing the front side of the crown segment, the rear mounting ridge including opposing right and left edges protruding outwardly from the rear mounting ridge. 7. The hard hat of claim 1 , further comprising a second auxiliary mounting ridge coupled to a second lateral side of the bottom portion of the crown segment, the second lateral side opposing the lateral side. 8. The hard hat of claim 7 , the second auxiliary mounting ridge comprising: a third end; a fourth end opposing the third end, the third end and fourth end positioned along the second lateral side of the bottom portion of the crown segment between the front side and the rear side of the crown segment; and a plurality of mounting slots positioned along the second auxiliary mounting ridge between the third end and the fourth end. 9. The hard hat of claim 1 , further comprising an internal side mounting ridge coupled to a lateral side of the interior surface, the internal side mounting ridge including a plurality of slots each configured to couple an accessory to the hard hat. 10. The hard hat of claim 9 , the internal side mounting ridge further including a tab extending downward, toward the brim, the tab including a bore configured to receive and secure a strap to the hard hat. 11. A hard hat, comprising: an outer shell comprising: an exterior surface; an interior surface defining a cavity configured to receive a head of an operator; a crown configured to cover part of the head of the operator, wherein a bottom portion of the crown defines a lower circumference along the exterior surface of the outer shell; and a brim extending radially outward from at least a portion of the lower circumference; a front mounting ridge, the front mounting ridge positioned on a front side of the crown, the front mounting ridge comprising: a right side; a left side opposing the right side; a right edge protruding outwardly and away from the right side of the front mounting ridge; a left edge opposing the right edge and protruding outwardly and away from the left side of the front mounting ridge; and a protrusion positioned on the front mounting ridge at the bottom portion of the crown between the right edge and the left edge and configured to interface with a mounting bracket. 12. The hard hat of claim 11 , further comprising: an auxiliary mounting ridge coupled to a lateral side of the bottom portion of the crown, the auxiliary mounting ridge comprising: a front end; a rear end opposing the front end; and a plurality of attachment ports positioned along the auxiliary mounting ridge between the front end and the rear end. 13. The hard hat of claim 12 , the plurality of attachment ports each including an inner surface configured to receive and couple accessories to the hard hat. 14. The hard hat of claim 11 , the right edge and left edge of the front mounting ridge each extending toward the brim, wherein the right edge and left edge each include a portion with an increased width as the right edge and left edge approach the brim. 15. The hard hat of claim 11 , further including a plurality of openings positioned on the front mounting ridge and extending through the outer shell. 16. The hard hat of claim 11 , further comprising an internal auxiliary mounting ridge coupled to a lateral side of the interior surface, the internal auxiliary mounting ridge including a plurality of attachment ports configured to receive and couple accessories to the hard hat. 17. The hard hat of claim 11 , wherein the front mounting ridge extends to the brim of the outer shell.
