Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Example techniques involve outputting multiple audio channels using a multiple driver playback device. An example playback device receives a first and second channel of audio content. The playback device plays back play back the first channel via a first group of audio transducers such that the first group of audio transducers form, via superposition, a first response lobe having a maximum in a first direction. Further, the playback device plays back the second channel via a second group of audio transducers such that the second group of audio transducers form, via superposition, a second response lobe having a maximum in a second direction that is separated by an angle of at least 45° from the first direction.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system comprising a plurality of playback devices comprising respective audio transducers, the system comprising: an input interface; at least one processor; and at least one first non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: receive, via the input interface, multi-channel audio content; generate a plurality of audio signals from the multi-channel audio content, the plurality of audio signals comprising respective audio signals corresponding to each playback device of the plurality of playback devices; and play back the generated plurality of audio signals in synchrony via the respective audio transducers of the plurality of playback devices to form, via superposition, (i) a first channel with a first response lobe originating from a first position and having a maximum in a first direction, (ii) a second channel with a second response lobe originating from a second position and having a maximum in a second direction, and (iii) a third channel with a third response lobe originating from a third position and having a maximum in a third direction. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to generate the plurality of audio signals comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: generate the plurality of audio signals such that radiation patterns of the respective audio transducers of the plurality of playback devices sum to form the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel when played back in synchrony. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of playback devices comprises a first playback device comprising one or more first audio transducers and a second playback device comprising one or more second audio transducers, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to play back the generated plurality of audio signals in synchrony comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: cause the first playback device to play back one or more first audio signals of the generated plurality of audio signals via the one or more first audio transducers; and cause the second playback device to play back one or more second audio signals of the generated plurality of audio signals via the one or more second audio transducers in synchrony with playback of the one or more first audio signals by the first playback device. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of playback devices further comprises a third playback device comprising one or more third audio transducers and a fourth playback device comprising one or more fourth audio transducers, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to play back the generated plurality of audio signals in synchrony comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: cause the third playback device to play back one or more third audio signals of the generated plurality of audio signals via the one or more third audio transducers in synchrony with playback of the one or more first audio signals by the first playback device; and cause the fourth playback device to play back one or more fourth audio signals of the generated plurality of audio signals via the one or more fourth audio transducers in synchrony with playback of the one or more first audio signals by the first playback device. 5. The system of claim 3 , further comprising an additional playback device including a woofer, and wherein the instructions are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is further configured to: play back bass frequencies of the multi-channel audio content via the woofer of the additional playback device in synchrony with playback of the one or more first audio signals by the first playback device. 6. The system of claim 3 , wherein a given first transducer of the first playback device produces a first radiation pattern with a maximum in a fourth direction in a given plane, wherein a given second transducer of the second playback device produces a second radiation pattern with a maximum in a fifth direction in the given plane, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to generate the plurality of audio signals comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: generate the plurality of audio signals such that first radiation pattern and the second radiation pattern sum to form the first channel with the first response lobe originating from the first position and having a maximum in the first direction, wherein the first direction is between the fourth direction and the fifth direction in the given plane. 7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an additional device including the input interface, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to receive the multi-channel audio content comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: receive, via the input interface of the additional device, the multi-channel audio content. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is further configured to: receive data representative of an environment surrounding the plurality of playback devices; and adjust at least one of the first direction, the second direction, or the third direction based on the received data representative of the environment surrounding the plurality of playback devices. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of playback devices comprises one or more microphones, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to receive the data representative of the environment surrounding the plurality of playback devices comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: receive, via the one or more microphones, microphone data that is representative of the environment surrounding the plurality of playback devices. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the multi-channel audio comprises a center channel, a left channel, and a right channel, and wherein the instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to play back the generated plurality of audio signals in synchrony via the respective audio transducers of the plurality of playback devices comprise instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to: play back the center channel of the multi-channel audio content via the first channel; play back the left channel of the multi-channel audio content via the second channel; and play back the right channel of the multi-channel audio content via the third channel. 11. A method to be performed by a system comprising a plurality of playback devices that include respective audio transducers, the method comprising: receiving, via an input interface, multi-channel audio content; generating a plurality of audio signals from the multi-channel audio content, the plurality of audio signals comprising respective audio signals corresponding t
