Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one general aspect, a method for filling multiple containers with a pharmaceutical product is disclosed, which comprises decontaminating sealed nested materials in a transfer chamber, removing from the sealed nested materials one or both of a container nest holding the multiple containers and a closure nest holding multiple closures, transferring from the transfer chamber to a controlled environment enclosure the removed nest, aseptically filling the containers with the pharmaceutical product, and closing the containers with the multiple closures. The nests are configured to allow multiple closures and containers to be simultaneously aligned concentrically, and closed simultaneously. Spring-loaded retaining structures on the closure nest allow it to releasably retain multiple closures above the corresponding multiple containers. In some embodiments the spring-loaded features are monolithically integrated with the closure nest. The product may be lyophilized in partially sealed containers while the sealing closures are releasably retained by the closure nest.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A closure nest for releasably retaining a plurality of pharmaceutical container closures wherein each closure comprises a stopper retained within a cylindrical cap having a radially extending exterior holding feature, the closure nest comprising: a planar support structure and a plurality of closure retaining structures attached to the support structure, wherein the planar support structure comprises an opening corresponding to each of the plurality of closure retaining structures, each of the plurality of closure retaining structures comprising: one or more elastically deformable retaining structures extending substantially orthogonally from the planar support structure, each elastically deformable retaining structure comprising a first stop structure to engage a lower portion of one of the plurality of closures below the radially extending holding feature with an upper surface of the first stop structure to vertically suspend and retain one of the plurality of closures without the nest contacting a stopper of the retained closure, wherein the first stop structures form a first arrangement configured as an annular arrangement, a second arrangement of one or more second stop structures extending substantially orthogonally from the planar support structure and configured to engage with a portion of an external top surface of the retained closure; wherein the opening in the planar support structure has a largest dimension smaller than an inner diameter of the annular first arrangement of first stop structures. 2. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein the support structure associated with each of the plurality of closure retaining structures comprises the opening in and through the support structure arranged to allow access through the support structure to an external top surface of the cap of the corresponding retained closure to thereby allow the closure to be forced from the closure retaining structure by deforming the elastically deformable retaining structures without contacting the stopper. 3. The closure nest of claim 2 , wherein the second arrangement of one or more second stop structures includes an annular arrangement having an inner diameter, the second stop structures sized and arranged to engage with a concentrically corresponding annular portion of the external top surface of the cap of the retained closure. 4. The closure nest of claim 3 , wherein the one or more elastically deformable retaining structures are arranged to disengage by elastic deformation from the holding feature without substantial deformation of the support structure when pressure is applied on the cap of the closure through the opening in the planar support structure. 5. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein the one or more elastically deformable retaining structures are arranged to disengage by elastic deformation from the holding feature without substantial deformation of the support structure when pressure is applied on the cap of the closure through the opening in the planar support structure. 6. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of closure retaining structures each comprising the one or more elastically deformable retaining structure are monolithically integrated with the planar support structure. 7. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein the support structure includes a polymeric support structure. 8. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein the closure retaining structures include flexible retaining structures. 9. The closure nest of claim 8 , wherein the flexible retaining structures include polymeric structures. 10. The closure nest of claim 1 , wherein each closure retaining structure further comprises at least three elastically deformable retaining structures. 11. A closure nest for releasably retaining a plurality of pharmaceutical container closures wherein each closure comprises a stopper retained within a cylindrical cap having a radially extending exterior holding feature, the closure nest comprising: a planar support structure; and a plurality of closure retaining structures attached to the planar support structure, each of the plurality of closure retaining structures comprising an opening through the planar support structure arranged to allow access through the planar support structure to an external top surface of the cap of the corresponding retained closure to thereby allow the closure to be forced from the closure retaining structure, each of the plurality of closure retaining structures comprising: one or more elastically deformable retaining structures extending substantially orthogonally from the planar support structure, wherein the one or more elastically deformable retaining structures are configured to deform to allow the closure to be forced from the closure retaining structure without contacting the stopper, each elastically deformable retaining structure comprising: a first stop structure to engage a lower portion of one of the plurality of closures below the radially extending holding feature with an upper surface of the first stop structure to vertically suspend and retain one of the plurality of closures without the nest contacting a stopper of the retained closure, wherein the first stop structures form a first arrangement configured as an annular arrangement; and a second arrangement of one or more second stop structures extending substantially orthogonally from the planar support structure and configured to engage with a portion of an external top surface of the cap of the retained closure; wherein the opening through the planar support structure has a largest dimension smaller than an inner diameter of the first annular arrangement of first stop structures. 12. The closure nest of claim 11 , wherein the one or more elastically deformable retaining structure is arranged to disengage by elastic deformation from the holding feature without substantial deformation of the support structure when pressure is applied on the cap of the closure through the opening through the planar support structure. 13. The closure nest of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of closure retaining structures each comprising the one or more elastically deformable retaining structure are monolithically integrated with the planar support structure. 14. The closure nest of claim 13 , wherein the one or more elastically deformable retaining structures are arranged to disengage by elastic deformation from the holding feature without substantial deformation of the support structure when pressure is applied on the cap of the closure through the opening through the planar support structure. 15. The closure nest of claim 11 , wherein the support structure includes a polymeric support structure. 16. The closure nest of claim 11 , wherein the closure retaining structures include flexible retaining structures. 17. The closure nest of claim 16 , wherein the flexible retaining structures include polymeric structures. 18. The closure nest of claim 11 , further comprising at least three elastically deformable retaining structures.
