Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A filter assembly and a method of operating the same to detect water leaks are provided. The filter assembly includes a filter housing for receiving a filter cartridge and at least partially defining a drain trough positioned below the filter cartridge for collecting leaked water. A light source is positioned proximate the drain trough for directing light through the drain trough and a light sensor is positioned proximate the drain trough for sensing the light directed through the drain trough. A controller uses the light sensor to monitor the light generated by the light source and determines that a leak exists when an intensity of sensed light is reduced by the leaked water.

What is claimed is: 1. A filter assembly comprising: a filter housing configured for receiving a filter cartridge, the filter housing at least partially defining a drain trough positioned below the filter cartridge for collecting leaked water; a collection tube fluidly coupled to a bottom of the drain trough; a heating element thermally coupled to the collection tube for selectively evaporating the leaked water or preventing condensation by keeping an outside of the collection tube above a dew point temperature; a light source positioned proximate the drain trough for directing light through at least one of the drain trough or the collection tube; a light sensor positioned proximate the drain trough for sensing the light directed through at least one of the drain trough or the collection tube; and a controller operably coupled to the light sensor, the controller being configured for determining that a leak exists when an intensity of sensed light is reduced by the leaked water. 2. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the collection tube is defined by the filter housing. 3. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the collection tube is a transparent tube attached to the filter housing. 4. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein a bottom of the collection tube is capped such that the leaked water is collected in the collection tube. 5. The filter assembly of claim 4 , wherein the collection tube extends along a vertical direction, the light source is positioned above the collection tube, and the light sensor is positioned proximate the bottom of the collection tube. 6. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein a bottom of the collection tube is open such that the leaked water may pass through and out of the collection tube. 7. The filter assembly of claim 6 , wherein the heating element is a transparent heater wrapped around the outside of the collection tube. 8. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the light source is positioned on a radially extending member on the filter cartridge and the light sensor is positioned on a stopping member defined within the drain trough of the filter housing. 9. The filter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the filter cartridge is rotatable until the radially extending member engages the stopping member to position the light source adjacent the light sensor. 10. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the filter assembly further comprises: an annular reservoir divided into a plurality of circumferentially spaced flood chambers, wherein the annular reservoir is rotatable to position an empty chamber of the plurality of flood chambers between the light source and the light sensor. 11. The filter assembly of claim 10 , wherein the light source is mounted to the filter cartridge proximate the empty chamber and the light sensor is mounted to a filter manifold proximate the empty chamber opposite the light source. 12. The filter assembly of claim 10 , further comprising: a color changing product positioned within the plurality of flood chambers to change a color of the leaked water when it passes into a respective one of the plurality of flood chambers. 13. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the light source is a light emitting diode and the light sensor is a photodiode. 14. The filter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising: a control valve for regulating a flow of water through a filter manifold, wherein the controller is further configured for: closing the control valve if the leak is detected. 15. The filter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the filter assembly is mountable in a cabinet of a refrigerator appliance, and wherein the controller is an appliance controller. 16. A refrigerator appliance comprising: a cabinet that defines a chilled chamber for receipt of food articles for storage; a dispensing assembly for providing a flow of water; and a filter assembly mounted to the cabinet and operably coupled to the dispensing assembly, the filter assembly comprising: a filter cartridge for filtering the flow of water; a filter housing configured for receiving the filter cartridge, the filter housing at least partially defining a drain trough positioned below the filter cartridge for collecting leaked water; a light source positioned proximate the drain trough for directing light through the drain trough; a light sensor positioned proximate the drain trough for sensing the light directed through the drain trough; and a controller operably coupled to the light sensor, the controller being configured for determining that a leak exists when an intensity of sensed light is reduced by the leaked water. 17. A filter assembly comprising: a filter housing configured for receiving a filter cartridge, the filter housing at least partially defining a drain trough positioned below the filter cartridge for collecting leaked water; a light source positioned proximate the drain trough for directing light through the drain trough; a light sensor positioned proximate the drain trough for sensing the light directed through the drain trough; a partition mounted to the filter housing between the light source and the light sensor to prevent the light from transmitting directly from the light source to the light sensor; a reflective tag positioned on the filter cartridge for reflecting the light from the light source toward the light sensor when the filter cartridge is properly installed in the filter housing; and a controller operably coupled to the light sensor, the controller being configured for determining that a leak exists when an intensity of sensed light is reduced by the leaked water. 18. The filter assembly of claim 17 , further comprising: an electrical heater mounted on the filter cartridge for heating the reflective tag to evaporate condensation or preventing condensation by keeping an outside of a collection tube above a dew point temperature.
