Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and corresponding method to move build material in a three-dimensional (3D) printing system uses a gripper. The gripper is arranged to apply at least two opposing lateral forces to the build material. The at least two opposing lateral forces are applied to the build material, in conjunction with linear motion of the gripper, for at least a portion of a path the build material travels toward an extrusion head.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A extrusion assembly for additive manufacturing, comprising: an extrusion head; an actuating assembly including an actuating component configured to advance a lead screw having a hollow core and a gripper along a longitudinal axis toward the extrusion head, wherein the gripper is configured to apply at least two opposing lateral forces to a build material to advance the build material toward the extrusion head; wherein the actuating assembly includes a movable cam tube having a extrusion zone between distal end and a proximal end, wherein the extrusion zone of the movable cam tube is configured to squeeze the gripper as the gripper advances towards the extrusion head and release the gripper in the distal end and proximal end; wherein the movable cam tube is biased against a housing of the actuating assembly by a spring. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gripper includes a collet. 3. A device for additive manufacturing, the device comprising: an extrusion head; and a collet configured to receive a rod of build material within an opening of the collet, wherein the collet is configured to have a first configuration in which the opening has a first width and a second configuration in which the opening has a second width smaller than the first width, and wherein, in the second configuration, the collet is configured to apply at least two opposing lateral forces to the rod of build material; wherein the collet is affixed to a lead screw driven by an actuating component, the lead screw having a hollow core through which the rod of build material can pass; and a spring biased cam tube configured to cause the collet to apply the at least two opposing lateral forces when it passes through an extrusion zone. 4. A device for additive manufacturing, the device comprising: an extrusion head; a lead screw driven by an actuating component; a gripper, wherein: the gripper is first, moveable by the lead screw along a longitudinal axis in a first direction relative to the extrusion head and relative to a rod of build material; the gripper is second, moveable by the lead screw along the longitudinal axis in the first direction relative to the extrusion head and while an extrusion zone of a cam tube is causing the gripper to apply at least two opposing lateral forces to the rod of build material so that the rod of build material moves in conjunction with the gripper; and the gripper is third, moveable by the lead screw along the longitudinal axis in a second direction, opposite the first direction, relative to the extrusion head and relative to the rod of build material.
