Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Devices, systems and methods are provided for stabilizing and grasping tissues such as valve leaflets, assessing the grasp of these tissues, approximating and fixating the tissues, and assessing the fixation of the tissues to treat cardiac valve regurgitation, particularly mitral valve regurgitation.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system for fixation of leaflets of a heart valve comprising: an implantable fixation device comprising: a first arm and a second arm, a first gripping element moveable relative to the first arm between a first first-gripping-element position and a second first-gripping-element position, wherein the first arm and the first gripping element are disposed on a first side of the implantable fixation device to define a first target area, and a second gripping element moveable relative to the second arm between a first second-gripping-element position and a second second-gripping-element position, wherein the second arm and the second gripping element are disposed on a second side of the implantable fixation device to define a second target area; a delivery device comprising: a catheter having a shaft having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, the implantable fixation device releasably mounted at the distal end portion, the catheter defining a lumen extending between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion and through a conduit extending laterally from the shaft and configured for release of a substance visible under visualization techniques directed toward at least one of the first target area or the second target area; and a visualization substance releasable through the lumen and visible under visualization techniques. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conduit is directed toward the first target area. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visualization substance comprises liquid contrast material. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visualization substance comprises bioabsorbable polymer beads. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conduit is directed toward the second target area. 6. A method comprising: advancing a system for fixation of leaflets of a heart valve comprising: an implantable fixation device comprising a first arm and a second arm, a first gripping element moveable relative to the first arm between a first first-gripping-element position and a second first-gripping-element position, wherein the first arm and the first gripping element are disposed on a first side of the implantable fixation device to define a first target area, and a second gripping element moveable relative to the second arm between a first second-gripping-element position and a second second-gripping-element position, wherein the second arm and the second gripping element are disposed on a second side of the implantable fixation device to define a second target area; and a delivery device comprising a catheter having a shaft and having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, the implantable fixation device releasably mounted at the distal end portion, the catheter defining a lumen extending between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion and through a conduit extending laterally from the shaft and configured for release of a substance visible under visualization techniques directed toward at least one of the first target area or the second target area; releasing a visualization substance through the lumen; observing the visualization substance released through the lumen using a visualization technique; and determining a position of one or more of a leaflet, the first gripping element, and the first arm from the observed visualization substance. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the visualization substance comprises liquid contrast material. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the visualization substance comprises bioabsorbable polymer beads. 9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising directing the visualization substance toward a target area. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the target area comprises the first gripping element. 11. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining a position comprises determining a position of a grasped leaflet within the fixation device. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising determining whether a leaflet is grasped between the first arm and the first gripping element.
