The invention provides a polymerizable composition and a hydrogel obtained or obtainable from the polymerizable composition. The polymerizable composition comprises cucurbituril and a first monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, wherein the total monomer concentration, Cmon, within the polymerizable composition is at least 0.5 M. The composition may be an aqueous composition.

The invention claimed is: 1. A polymerizable composition comprising cucurbituril and a first monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, wherein the total monomer concentration, C mon , within the polymerizable composition is from 0.05 M to 2.0 M, and wherein the guest and cucurbituril have an association constant of at least 10 3 M −1 . 2. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 which is an aqueous polymerizable composition. 3. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 wherein the cucurbituril is a CB [8] cucurbituril. 4. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , wherein at least some of the cucurbituril is in complex with a guest or guests provided within the polymerizable composition. 5. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a second monomer, which differs from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 6. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising an additional monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, which additional monomer differs from the first monomer, and the additional monomer is for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 7. The polymerizable composition according to claim 6 , wherein the guest of the additional monomer is suitable for forming a ternary complex with the cucurbituril and the guest of the first monomer. 8. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a crosslinking monomer different from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 9. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a monomer having a detectable label, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 10. The polymerizable composition according claim 1 , further comprising an additional polymerizable monomer different from the first monomer, and comprising a cucurbituril group within the additional polymerizable monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 11. A polymerizable composition comprising cucurbituril and a first monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, wherein the total monomer concentration, C mon , within the polymerizable composition is at least 0.5 M, and wherein the monomers in the polymerizable composition have carbon-carbon double bonds for reaction in a polymerization reaction. 12. The polymerizable composition according to claim 2 , wherein a monomer has a solubility in water of at least 1 g/L. 13. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a component for incorporation into a hydrogel. 14. A method for forming a hydrogel, the method comprising the step of polymerizing the polymerizable composition of claim 2 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a network of non-covalently linked polymers. 15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the polymerization is a light-activated, radical polymerization performed at a temperature in the range 10 to 25° C. 16. A method for forming a polymer, the method comprising the step of polymerizing a polymerizable composition according to claim 1 . 17. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a second monomer, which differs from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer; a crosslinking monomer different from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 18. The polymerizable composition according to claim 17 , further comprising an additional monomer which differs from the first monomer, having a guest for the cucurbituril, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 19. The polymerizable composition according claim 17 , further comprising an additional monomer comprising the cucurbituril as a group within the additional monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 20. A polymerizable composition comprising cucurbituril, a first monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, an additional monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, wherein the guest of the additional monomer is suitable for forming a ternary complex with the cucurbituril and the guest of the first monomer, which additional monomer differs from the first monomer, and the additional monomer is for co-polymerization with the first monomer, and wherein the total monomer concentration, C mon , within the polymerizable composition is from 0.05 M to 2.0 M. 21. A polymerizable composition comprising cucurbituril, a first monomer having a guest for the cucurbituril, and a crosslinking monomer different from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer wherein the total monomer concentration, C mon , within the polymerizable composition is from 0.05 M to 2.0 M. 22. The polymerizable composition according to claim 21 , further comprising a second monomer, which differs from the first monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 23. The polymerizable composition according to claim 22 , further comprising an additional monomer which differs from the first monomer, having a guest for the cucurbituril, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 24. The polymerizable composition according claim 17 , further comprising an additional monomer comprising the cucurbituril as a group within the additional monomer, for co-polymerization with the first monomer. 25. The polymerizable composition of claim 1 , wherein the guest and cucurbituril have an association constant of at least 10 4 M −1 .
