A modular cassette and method for separating a composite fluid into at least two component parts thereof during centrifugation is provided. The modular cassette includes a fluid inlet portion, at least one fluid separation portion, at least one media chamber in fluid communication with the fluid separation portion, a fluid collection portion, at least one fluidic channel configured to form a fluid communication between at least two components of the cassette, at least one wax valve including undulating flow channel portions configured to close at least one of the fluidic channels, and at least one heating element configured to actuate the at least one wax valve.

What is claimed is: 1. A modular cassette for separating a composite fluid into at least two component parts thereof during centrifugation, the modular cassette comprising: a fluid inlet portion; a fluid separation portion; a media chamber in fluid communication with the fluid separation portion; a fluid collection portion; a fluidic channel configured to provide fluid communication between at least two components of the modular cassette; a wax valve including: a flow pathway including semicircular undulations configured to facilitate closing of the fluidic channel, the semicircular undulations being arranged such that a width of the flow pathway varies along at least one section of the flow pathway; and a volume of wax sufficient to fill and occlude one or more of the semicircular undulations of the flow pathway to close the fluidic channel; and a heating element configured to actuate the wax valve. 2. The modular cassette of claim 1 , wherein the wax valve comprises an injection cavity. 3. The modular cassette of claim 2 , wherein the injection cavity comprises at least one injection port. 4. The modular cassette of claim 3 , wherein the injection cavity further comprises at least one vent. 5. The modular cassette of claim 4 , wherein the injection cavity further comprises an extended portion configured to accept a volume of molten wax equal to a volume of at least part of the flow pathway. 6. The modular cassette of claim 1 , wherein concave surfaces of opposing pairs of the semicircular undulations face one another at an interior of the flow pathway. 7. A modular cassette for separating a composite fluid into at least two component parts thereof during centrifugation, the modular cassette comprising: a fluid inlet portion; a fluid separation portion including a middle section, an inlet port, and an exit port that is spaced apart from the inlet port; a planar skimmer dam disposed in the middle section and including a surface that is angled in a direction toward the exit port a media chamber in fluid communication with the fluid separation portion; a fluid collection portion; a fluidic channel configured to provide fluid communication between at least two components of the modular cassette; and a wax valve configured to close the fluidic channel. 8. The modular cassette of claim 7 , wherein the fluid separation portion comprises a first section having a first volume in fluid communication with a second section having a second volume. 9. The modular cassette of claim 8 , wherein the middle section comprises a third volume that is smaller than the first volume and the second volume. 10. The modular cassette of claim 9 , wherein the angle of the planar skimmer dam is between 40 and 50 degrees relative to a line parallel to a centrifugal force created in the modular cassette during centrifugation. 11. The modular cassette of claim 8 , wherein the fluidic channel configured to provide fluid communication between at least two components of the modular cassette connects the first section of the fluid separation portion with the second section of the fluid separation portion. 12. The modular cassette of claim 7 , wherein the wax valve is an Injectable Channel (IC) Normally Open Valve (NOV). 13. A modular cassette for separating a composite fluid into at least two component parts thereof during centrifugation, the modular cassette comprising: a fluid inlet portion; an hourglass-shaped fluid separation portion including a middle section and an exit port; a planar skimmer dam disposed in the middle section and including a surface that is angled in a direction toward the exit port; a media chamber in fluid communication with the hourglass-shaped fluid separation portion; a fluid collection portion; a fluidic channel configured to provide fluid communication between at least two components of the modular cassette, the fluidic channel being defined at least in part by a gap between the planar skimmer dam and a sidewall of the hourglass-shaped fluid separation portion; a wax valve configured to close the fluidic channel. 14. The modular cassette of claim 13 , wherein the planar skimmer dam is disposed at an angle of between 40 and 50 degrees relative to a line parallel to a centrifugal force created in the modular cassette during centrifugation. 15. The modular cassette of claim 13 , wherein the wax valve comprises: a flow pathway including semicircular undulations configured to facilitate closing of the fluidic channel, the semicircular undulations being arranged such that a width of the flow pathway varies along at least one section of the flow pathway; and a volume of wax sufficient to fill and occlude one or more of the semicircular undulations of the flow pathway to close the fluidic channel. 16. A method for separating a composite fluid, the method comprising: inputting the composite fluid into a first portion of a modular cassette; inputting, at a distance from an axis of rotation that is smaller than a distance from the axis of rotation of the first portion, a separation media having a greater density than the composite fluid into a second portion of the modular cassette; inputting the modular cassette into a centrifuge; rotating the modular cassette in the centrifuge; actuating, with an electrical resistor, a wax valve to release the separation media from the second portion into the first portion, causing a displacement of the composite fluid in the first portion; separating, in the first portion, the composite fluid into two or more parts; and collecting, from the modular cassette, one or more of the two or more parts of the composite fluid, wherein the wax valve includes: a flow pathway including semicircular undulations configured to facilitate closing of a fluidic channel, the semicircular undulations being arranged such that a width of the flow pathway varies along at least one section of the flow pathway; and a volume of wax sufficient to fill and occlude one or more of the semicircular undulations of the flow pathway to close the fluidic channel. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the inputting of the composite fluid into the first portion further comprises inputting the composite fluid into a first section of the first portion, the first section of the first portion having a first volume and being in fluid communication with a second section of the first portion having a second volume. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the separating of the composite fluid further comprises separating the composite fluid in a third section of the first portion, the third section having a third volume that is smaller than the first volume and the second volume. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the separating of the composite fluid further comprises separating the composite fluid using a planar skimmer dam positioned in the third section. 20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the separating of the composite fluid further comprises actuating a second wax valve configured to separate the first section of the first portion from the second section of the first portion. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the second wax valve is an Injectable Channel (IC) Normally Open Valve (NOV). 22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the actuating of the IC NOV further comprises flowing molten wax into at least one undulating flow channel portion of the IC NOV. 23.
