Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A parking meter receives data indicative of a remote payment being completed and displays an amount of time purchased by the remote payment for a parking session. The parking meter determines an amount of time remaining in the parking session and powers down at least a portion of a meter communication subsystem subsequent to receiving the data indicative of the remote payment being completed. The parking meter wakes up the powered down portion of the communication subsystem upon determining that the amount of time remaining is below a threshold time, and can receive an indication of additional time being paid for remotely, and can update the displayed time remaining to reflect the additional time.

We claim: 1. A parking meter device comprising: a display, and a communication subsystem configured to provide two-way wireless communication, the parking meter device configured to perform at least the following: a) receive data indicative of a first payment for a parking session; b) present an initial amount of time remaining in the parking session at the display; c) wirelessly receive a first communication by the communication subsystem while the communication subsystem, or at least a portion of the communication subsystem, is in a first power mode; and d) the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, entering a second power mode during the parking session; wherein the display is powered and operational in the first and second power modes. 2. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the first payment is a remote payment. 3. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the first payment is a non-remote payment. 4. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein in the second power mode communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, uses more power than in the first power mode. 5. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the communication subsystem comprises a modem and supports one or more of: active, standby, and dormant power modes. 6. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the first communication includes data indicative of a second payment for additional time in the parking session. 7. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to place the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, in the second power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to enter to the second power mode in response to receiving the first communication. 8. The parking meter device of claim 1 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to return the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode. 9. The parking meter device of claim 8 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to return the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode, in response to receiving a second communication. 10. A method of operating a meter comprising: a display and a communication subsystem, the method comprising: a) receiving data indicative of a first payment for a parking session; b) presenting an initial amount of time remaining in the parking session at the display; c) wirelessly receiving a first communication by the communication subsystem while the communication subsystem, or at least a portion of the communication subsystem, is in a first power mode; and d) the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, entering a second power mode during the parking session; wherein the display is powered and operational in the first and second power modes. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first payment is a remote payment. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first payment is a non-remote payment. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein in the second power mode the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, uses more power than in the first power mode. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first communication includes data indicative of a second payment for additional time in the parking session. 15. The method of claim 10 , comprising placing the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, in the second power mode or instructing the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to enter to the second power mode in response to receiving the first communication. 16. The method of claim 10 , comprising returning the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instructing the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein returning the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instructing the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode is performed, in response to receiving a second communication. 18. A parking meter device comprising: a display, and a communication subsystem configured to provide two-way wireless communication, the parking meter device configured to perform at least the following: a) receive data indicative of a first payment for a parking session while the communication subsystem, or at least a portion of the communication subsystem, is in a first power mode; b) present an initial amount of time remaining in the parking session at the display; c) detect a first event during the parking session; and d) the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, entering a second power mode during the parking session; wherein the display is powered and operational in the first and second power modes. 19. The parking meter device of claim 18 , wherein the first payment is a remote payment. 20. The parking meter device of claim 18 , wherein in the second power mode the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, uses more power than in the first power mode. 21. The parking meter device of claim 18 , wherein the first event comprises receiving data indicative of a second payment for additional time in the parking session. 22. The parking meter device of claim 18 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to place the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, in the second power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to enter to the second power mode in response to detecting the first event. 23. The parking meter device of claim 18 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to return the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode. 24. The parking meter device of claim 23 , wherein the parking meter device is configured to return the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to the first power mode or instruct the communication subsystem, or the at least a portion of the communication subsystem, to return to the first power mode in response to detecting a second event. 25. A method of operating a meter comprising: a display and a communication subsystem, the method comprising: a) receiving data indicative of a payment for a parking session while the communication subsystem, or at least a portion of the communication subsystem, is in a fir
