Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A social media platform provides a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for accessing social media content submitted for public accessibility via the social media platform supported by the map-based GUI. The GUI includes a map providing interactive location-based searching functionality in that selection of a target location by the user in the GUI, such as by tapping or clicking at the target location, triggers a search for social media content having geo-tag data indicating geographic locations within a geographical search area centered on the target location.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: causing display on a user device of an interactive map for a particular geographic area, the interactive map forming part of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media application; receiving a search query triggered by a location-targeted search command comprising user input selecting a target point on the interactive map of the map-based GUI; in an automated operation that is performed responsive to the location targeted search command and that is performed using or more computer processor devices configured therefor, performing a location-based search which is limited to identifying social media content located within a geographical search area defined based on the target point, thereby producing a result set of social media items, each of which comprises respective visual media content; and causing presentation on the user device of search results for the location-based search by automatically launching, directly responsive to the location-targeted search command, automated sequential display of the result set, the automated sequential display comprising reproduction of the respective visual media content of the result set one after another in sequence. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the launching of the automated sequential display is directly responsive to the location-targeted search command comprises automatically commencing replay of a first item in the result set without any intervening user input. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the presentation of the search results by sequential visual media content reproduction is initiated without any preceding presentation of the result set in list form. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the location-based search comprises: determining the geographical search area based at least in part on the user-selected target point; and identifying from a superset of social media items a search result set limited to items within the social media items superset respectively satisfy inclusion criteria that includes having a respective posting location situated within the geographical search area, the posting location of each social media item being indicated by respective item-specific geotag data. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the interactive map includes a plurality of collection icons at different respective display locations on the map, each collection icon corresponding to a respective geo-anchored collection of social media items grouped together in the collection based at least in part on geo-tag data of the respective social media items, wherein the inclusion criteria of the location-based search is further configured to exclude any social media item that is a member of any of the location-based collections represented by the plurality of displayed collection icons. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the superset of social media items comprises social media items submitted by multiple different users for public availability via the social media application. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the superset of social media items is comprised of ephemeral messages. 8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising performing a sequencing operation on the search result set, the sequencing operation comprising: clustering the social media items in the search result set by at least one of geotag location and timestamp, thus deriving a plurality of clusters of social media items; sorting the plurality of clusters by distance from the target point; and within each cluster, sorting the social media items by timestamp. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the automated sequential display is performed according to a display sequence based at least in part on results of the sequencing operation. 10. The method of claim 4 , wherein performing the location-based search comprises: defining a dynamic geographical search area radiating outwards from the target point; while the dynamic geographical search area radiates outwards, identifying for inclusion in the search result set social media items with respective geotag locations falling within the dynamic geographical search area; and upon determining that a predefined search limit is reached, stopping the location-based search. 11. A system comprising: one or more computer processor devices; and memory having stored thereon instructions that configure the one or more computer processor devices, when the instructions are executed by the one or more computer processor devices, to perform operations comprising: causing display on a user device of an interactive map for a particular geographic area, the interactive map forming part of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media application; receiving a search query triggered by a location-targeted search command comprising user input selecting a target point on the interactive map of the map-based GUI; responsive to the location targeted search command, performing a location-based search which is limited to identifying social media content located within a geographical search area defined based on the target point, thereby producing a result set of social media items, each of which comprises respective visual media content; and causing presentation on the user device of search results for the location-based search by automatically launching, directly responsive to the location- targeted search command, automated sequential display of the result set, the automated sequential display comprising reproduction of the respective visual media content of the result set one after another in sequence. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the instructions configure the one or more computer processor devices to launch the automated sequential display is directly responsive to the location-targeted search command comprises automatically commencing replay of a first item in the result set without any intervening user input. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instructions configure the one or more computer processor devices to initiate presentation of the search results by sequential visual media content display without any preceding presentation of the result set in list form. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the instructions configure the one or more computer processor devices to performing the location-based search in a procedure comprising: determining the geographical search area based at least in part on the user-selected target point; and identifying from a superset of social media items a search result set limited to items within the social media items superset respectively satisfy inclusion criteria that includes having a respective posting location situated within the geographical search area, the posting location of each social media item being indicated by respective item-specific geotag data. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the interactive map includes a plurality of collection icons at different respective display locations on the map, each collection icon corresponding to a respective geo-anchored collection of social media items grouped together in the collection based at least in part on geo-tag data of the respective social media items, wherein the inclusion criteria of the location-based search is further configured to exclude any social media item that is a member of any of the location-based collections represented by the plurality of displayed collection icons. 16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the superset of social media items comprises social media items submitted by multiple different users for public availability via the social medi
