Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Dental assemblies and related methods of making are provided. The dental assemblies include a dental article with a bonding surface an adhesive having both a compressible material and at least one hardenable dental composition extending across the bonding surface. The compressible material is coupled to the dental article by a first quantity of hardened dental composition extending at least partially through the compressible material and contacting the bonding surface. The hardened dental composition extends over less than the entire bonding surface. Adjacent portions of the compressible material contain a second quantity of unhardened dental composition, preserving flexibility of the compressible material. Advantageously, this configuration was found to enhance bond reliability and facilitate manufacturing.

What is claimed is: 1. A dental assembly, comprising: a dental article having an outer base surface adapted for bonding to a tooth; a compressible material contacting and extending across at least a portion of the outer base surface, wherein the compressible material has a first major surface adjacent to the outer base surface of the dental article and a second major surface opposite the first major surface of the compressible material; a first region of the compressible material comprising a hardened dental composition therein, wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region overlies a local area of the outer base surface with a surface area less than a total surface area of the outer base surface, and wherein the compressible material is at least partially compressed in the first region independent of being contacted by a tooth structure surface; and a second region of the compressible material, different from the first region, at least partially surrounding the first region as viewed from a direction perpendicular to the outer base surface, wherein the second region comprises an unhardened dental composition therein. 2. The dental assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region extends from the first major surface of the compressible material to the second major surface of the compressible material. 3. The dental assembly of claim 1 , further comprising at least one layer of a dental composition between the first major surface of the compressible material and the outer base surface of the dental article, and wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition contacts the compressible material. 4. The dental assembly of claim 3 , wherein the dental composition is chosen from an adhesive, a primer, and mixtures and combinations thereof. 5. The dental assembly of claim 3 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the first major surface of the compressible material is patterned. 6. The dental assembly of claim 3 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the first major surface of the compressible material is continuous. 7. The dental assembly of claim 1 , further comprising at least one layer of a dental composition on the second major surface of the compressible material. 8. The dental assembly of claim 7 , wherein the dental composition is chosen from an adhesive, a primer, and mixtures and combinations thereof. 9. The dental assembly of claim 7 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the second major surface of the compressible material is patterned. 10. The dental assembly of claim 7 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the second major surface of the compressible material is continuous. 11. A dental assembly, comprising: a dental article having an outer base surface adapted for bonding to a tooth; at least one layer of a dental composition on the outer base surface of the dental article, wherein the dental composition is chosen from adhesives, primers, and mixtures and combinations thereof; a compressible material contacting and extending across at least a portion of the layer of the at least one layer of the dental composition, wherein the compressible material has a first major surface adjacent to the at least one layer of the dental composition and a second major surface opposite the first major surface of the compressible material; a first region of the compressible material comprising a hardened dental composition absorbed therein, wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region extends from the first major surface of the compressible material to the second major surface of the compressible material, wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region overlies a local area of the outer base surface with a surface area less than a total surface area of the outer base surface, and wherein the compressible material is at least partially compressed in the first region independent of being contacted by a tooth structure surface; and a second region of the compressible material, different from the first region, at least partially surrounding the first region as viewed from a direction perpendicular to the outer base surface, wherein the second region comprises an unhardened dental composition absorbed therein. 12. The dental assembly of claim 11 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the first major surface of the compressible material is patterned. 13. The dental assembly of claim 11 , wherein the at least one layer of the dental composition on the first major surface of the compressible material is continuous. 14. The dental assembly of claim 11 , further comprising at least one layer of a dental composition on the second major surface of the compressible material, wherein the dental composition is chosen from adhesives, primers, and mixtures and combinations thereof. 15. A dental assembly, comprising: a dental article having an outer base surface adapted for bonding to a tooth; a compressible material contacting and extending across at least a portion of the outer base surface; a first region of the compressible material comprising a hardened dental composition therein, wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region overlies a local area of the outer base surface with a surface area less than a total surface area of the outer base surface, and wherein the compressible material is at least partially compressed in the first region independent of being contacted by a tooth structure surface; and a second region of the compressible material, different from the first region, at least partially surrounding the first region as viewed from a direction perpendicular to the outer base surface, wherein the second region comprises an unhardened dental composition therein, and wherein the unhardened dental composition in the second region contacts a portion of the outer base surface not in contact with the hardened dental composition. 16. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the hardened dental composition in the first region extends from the outer base surface of the dental article and terminates at an exposed surface of the compressible material. 17. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the first region of the compressible material extends over about 2% to about 30% of the outer base surface of the dental article, relative to the total area of the outer base surface. 18. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein at least 80 volume % of the compressible material in the first region is filled with the hardened dental composition. 19. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the compressible material is translucent. 20. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the hardened dental composition and the unhardened dental composition have essentially the same chemical composition. 21. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the hardened dental composition has a filler loading greater than the filler loading of the unhardened dental composition. 22. The dental assembly of claim 21 , wherein the hardened dental composition has a filler loading from about 60 to 90 weight percent, based on the total weight of the first quantity. 23. The dental assembly of claim 15 , wherein the local area of outer base surface is centrally located with respect to the outer base surface as viewed from a direction perpendicular to the outer base sur
