What is claimed is: 1. A removable and replaceable carbon monoxide (CO) sensor module comprising: a housing having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion configured to be removably inserted into a compartment of a generator and the second portion configured to be positioned outside of the compartment; a CO sensor positioned within the first portion of the housing and configured to detect concentrations of CO; and a module battery positioned within the housing and configured to power the CO sensor module; wherein the second portion of the housing includes a mounting ring configured to abut a control panel of the generator in an installed position. 2. The module of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the housing includes a projection extending therefrom configured to align with a recess on the generator. 3. The module of claim 1 , further comprising: an LED light positioned within the housing and configured to alert a user to a condition of the CO sensor module; and a light pipe configured to project light emitted from the LED light to be visible to a user. 4. The module of claim 3 , wherein the condition is at least one of a life of the module battery, a life of the CO sensor, and a malfunction of the CO sensor module. 5. The module of claim 1 , wherein the CO sensor module includes a module wire harness configured to couple to an engine wire harness on an engine of the generator. 6. The module of claim 5 , wherein when the module wire harness is coupled to the engine wire harness, the engine can start, and when the module wire harness is decoupled from the engine wire harness, an ignition of the engine is grounded and the engine cannot start. 7. The module of claim 1 , further comprising a seal positioned between the CO sensor and an inner surface of the housing. 8. The module of claim 1 , wherein the module is operable in a pre-activation mode, an active mode, and a sleep mode; wherein in the pre-activation mode, the CO sensor does not detect a level of CO; wherein in the active mode, the CO sensor is configured to detect the level of CO every first interval and the level of CO is above a predetermined threshold, the CO sensor module transmits a signal to activate an LED light within the housing; wherein in the sleep mode, the CO sensor is configured to detect the level of CO every second interval, the second interval larger than the first interval. 9. A carbon monoxide (CO) sensor module comprising: a housing having a sensor portion and a mounting portion, the sensor portion extending away from the mounting portion and supporting a locating protrusion extending outward from the sensor portion, and the mounting portion having a mounting ring extending radially outward beyond the sensor portion; a CO sensor positioned within the sensor portion of the housing and configured to detect concentrations of CO; a module battery positioned within the housing and configured to power the CO sensor module; and a wire harness extending away from the sensor portion of the housing and configured to provide a signal from the CO sensor. 10. The module of claim 9 , wherein the sensor portion of the housing is configured to be removably inserted into a compartment of a generator and the mounting portion is configured to be positioned outside the compartment. 11. The module of claim 9 , wherein the wire harness includes a terminal connector positioned at a distal end of the wire harness, the terminal connector including one or more terminals configured to engage a complimentary engine wire harness terminal connector. 12. The module of claim 11 , wherein the engine wire harness terminal connector is coupled to an engine wire harness extending away from an engine, and wherein the engine wire harness is configured to transmit signals received from the wire harness to the engine. 13. The module of claim 12 , wherein the terminal connector includes a plurality of male terminals and wherein the engine wire harness terminal connector includes a plurality of female terminals configured to receive the plurality of male terminals to form an electrical coupling between the module and the engine. 14. The module of claim 9 , further comprising: an LED light positioned within the housing and configured to alert a user to a condition of the CO sensor module; and a light pipe configured to project light emitted from the LED light to be visible to a user. 15. The module of claim 9 , wherein the module is operable in a pre-activation mode, an active mode, and a sleep mode; wherein in the pre-activation mode, the CO sensor does not detect a level of CO; wherein in the active mode, the CO sensor is configured to detect the level of CO every first interval and the level of CO is above a predetermined threshold, the CO sensor module transmits a signal to activate an LED light within the housing; and wherein in the sleep mode, the CO sensor is configured to detect the level of CO every second interval, the second interval larger than the first interval. 16. A carbon monoxide (CO) sensor module comprising: a housing having a sensor portion and a mounting portion, the sensor portion extending away from the mounting portion, and the mounting portion having a mounting projection extending laterally outward beyond the sensor portion; a CO sensor positioned within the sensor portion of the housing and configured to detect concentrations of CO; a module battery positioned within the housing and configured to power the CO sensor module; and a terminal connection extending away from the sensor portion of the housing and configured to provide a signal from the CO sensor. 17. The module of claim 16 , wherein the mounting projection includes at least one tab extending outwardly from the housing, wherein the at least one tab is flexibly coupled to the housing. 18. The module of claim 17 , wherein the mounting projection includes at least two tabs extending outwardly from opposite sides of the housing, wherein the at least two tabs are flexibly coupled to the housing and configured to bend between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein in the unlocked position, distal ends of the at least two tabs are bent inward toward the housing. 19.
