Official abstract text for this publication.
A locking mechanism for a medical device to selective lock a first elongate member from longitudinal movement relative to a second elongate member of the medical device. The locking mechanism includes a flexible tubular member disposed in a bore of a handle assembly of the medical device, and an actuator, such as a cam member having a cam or eccentric surface. Pivotable movement of the actuator from a first position to a second position compresses or deforms the flexible tubular member against the first elongate member to lock the first elongate member from longitudinal movement relative to the handle assembly.

What is claimed is: 1. A medical catheter assembly comprising: an outer tubular member; an inner tubular member slidably disposed in a lumen of the outer tubular member; a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the outer tubular member, the handle assembly including: a housing; a flexible member positioned in the housing; a locking mechanism including an actuator actuatable between a first position and a second position; a push member positioned between the flexible member and the actuator, wherein the actuator is moveable along a surface of the push member between the first position and the second position; and an elongate member affixed to the inner tubular member and extending proximally therefrom through the lumen of the outer tubular member; wherein the elongate member and the inner tubular member are longitudinally movable relative to the outer tubular member and the handle assembly when the actuator is in the first position, and the elongate member and the inner tubular member are restrained from moving relative to the outer tubular member and the handle assembly when the actuator is in the second position; and wherein the elongate member extends along a longitudinal axis, the actuator is pivotably attached to the housing about a pivot axis, the actuator includes an eccentric surface having a variable distance from the pivot axis and wherein the eccentric surface of the actuator is located a first distance from the longitudinal axis when the actuator is in the first position and a second distance from the longitudinal axis when the actuator is in the second position, wherein the second distance is less than the first distance. 2. The medical catheter assembly of claim 1 comprising a first coefficient of friction between a surface of the flexible member and an outer surface of the elongate member when the actuator is in the first position, and a second coefficient of friction between a surface of the flexible member and the outer surface of the elongate member when the actuator is in the second position, the second coefficient of friction being greater than the first coefficient of friction. 3. The medical catheter assembly of claim 1 wherein the flexible member is forced against the elongate member in response to a force exerted by the eccentric surface of the actuator against the flexible member when the actuator is in the second position. 4. The medical catheter assembly of claim 1 wherein the elongate member is restrained from moving within the flexible member when the actuator is in the second position. 5. The medical catheter assembly of claim 1 wherein the elongate member extends through a lumen of the flexible member. 6. The medical catheter assembly of claim 1 wherein the housing includes a bore extending therethrough. 7. The medical catheter assembly of claim 6 wherein the bore includes a first portion having a first diameter and a second portion having a second diameter greater than the first diameter, wherein the flexible member is positioned in the second portion and extends from a proximal end to a distal end of the second portion. 8. The medical catheter assembly of claim 7 wherein the flexible member has an outer diameter greater than the first diameter of the first portion of the bore. 9. The medical catheter assembly of claim 7 wherein a lumen of the flexible member has a diameter substantially equal to the first diameter of the first portion of the bore.
