A method to guide in preparation of a bone relies on an instrument having a shaft with a working end and a stop member. The shaft is free to translate along an axis. Surgical planning data is registered to the bone to determine intra-operative coordinates of the desired axis and depth. The instrument holder is positioned by the bone so the stop member contacts the instrument holder to prevent translating beyond the desired depth. Alternatively, an arm is manipulated to align the instrument with the desired axis. The working end rests on the bone to define a linear separation to the desired depth. By proximally translating the instrument holder to contact the stop member and distally translating the instrument holder along the shaft, the stop member physically stops translating beyond the desired depth. A surgical system for performing the methods is provided; a reamer or impactor are also disclosed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for preventing a working end of an instrument from translating beyond a pre-determined location relative to a bone, the method comprising: providing a surgical robot comprising an instrument holder configured to couple with an instrument, the instrument comprising a working end and a stop member proximal to the working end, wherein the instrument can translate with respect to the instrument holder; and positioning the instrument holder at a position with respect to the pre-determined location such that the stop member positioned along an axis of the instrument will contact a portion of the instrument holder to prevent the working end from translating beyond the pre-determined location in a direction toward the bone. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the bone is an acetabulum. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the instrument is a reamer or an impactor. 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the reamer or impactor further comprises a handle, wherein a distal end of the handle is the stop member. 5. The method of claim 3 further comprising, reaming, with the reamer, the acetabulum to the pre-determined location. 6. The method of claim 3 further comprising, impacting, with the impactor, the prosthesis to the pre-determined location. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising protecting the surgical robot by adding one or more force suppressing springs or elastic padding to the stop member or a proximal end of the instrument holder. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the pre-determined location is a desired depth for a prosthesis when implanted in the bone. 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising positioning the instrument holder to align an axis of the instrument with a desired axis for implanting a prosthesis the bone. 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising registering the desired depth and desired axis to the location of the bone. 11. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing planning software stored in non-transient memory and operatively coupled to a processor for planning the desired depth and desired axis for the prosthesis with respect to the bone. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument holder is configured to couple to the instrument between the working end and the stop member. 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the instrument can translate between the working end and the stop member when coupled to the instrument holder. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the instrument holder is rigidly held at the position with respect to the pre-determined location such that the stop member contacts a portion of the instrument holder when the working end reaches the predetermined location. 15. A method for preventing a working end of an instrument from translating beyond a pre-determined location with respect to a bone, the method comprising: providing a surgical robot comprising an instrument holder configured to couple with an instrument, the instrument comprising a working end and a stop member proximal to the working end, wherein the instrument can translate with respect to the instrument holder; resting the working end on a surface of the bone to define a distance between: i) the working end resting on the surface of the bone; and ii) the pre-determined location relative to the bone; and positioning the instrument holder at the defined distance from the stop member such that the stop member positioned along an axis of the instrument will contact a portion of the instrument holder to prevent the working end from translating beyond the pre-determined location in a direction towards the bone. 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the instrument is configured to couple with the instrument holder between the working end and the stop member. 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the instrument further comprises a handle, and wherein the stop member is a distal end of the handle. 18. The method of claim 16 wherein the stop member or proximal end of the instrument holder further comprises one or more force suppressing springs or elastic padding. 19. The method of claim 15 wherein the positioning of the instrument holder is accomplished by first proximally translating the instrument holder to contact the stop member and then distally translating the instrument holder along the shaft by the defined distance. 20. The method of claim 15 wherein the pre-determined location is a desired depth for a prosthesis when implanted in the bone, and wherein the method further comprises positioning the instrument holder to align an axis of the instrument with a desired axis for implanting the prosthesis the bone.
