Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An adjustable dumbbell system may include a base, two or more weights, a handle assembly, an additional weight, and selection assembly. The two or more weights may be supported by the base and grouped into a first set of weights associated with one end of the dumbbell system and a second set of weights associated with an opposing end of the dumbbell system. The handle assembly may be selectively fixedly joined to the first and second set of weights. The additional weight may be disposed distally of the handle assembly. The selection assembly may be secured to the additional weight. The selection assembly may include a selection member that may be linearly moveable between a selected position where the additional weight is operatively secured to the handle assembly and an unselected position where the additional weight is disengaged from the handle assembly.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An adjustable dumbbell system, comprising: a handle assembly comprising one or more discs that rotate about a longitudinal axis of the handle assembly for selectively coupling one or more of a plurality of weights to the handle assembly depending upon a rotational orientation of at least one disc of the one or more discs, wherein the at least one disc comprises a first face and a second face opposite the first face, wherein the at least one disc comprises a first weight selection feature on the first face and a second weight selection feature on the second face, wherein each of the first and second weight selection features are configured to engage a respective one of a first and second weights from the plurality of weights for selectively coupling one or both of the first and second weights to the handle assembly. 2. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 1 , wherein the first weight selection feature and the second weight selection feature protrude from the respective one of the first and second faces of the at least one disc. 3. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 2 , wherein the first weight selection features comprises a first arcuate flange extending along the first face of the at least one disc and the second weight selection feature comprises a second arcuate flange extending along the second face of the at least one disc. 4. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 3 , wherein the first arcuate flange and the second arcuate flange are arranged at different radial positions on the respective first or second face of the at least one disc. 5. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of weights comprises a supplemental weight supported by the first weight, wherein joining the first weight to the handle assembly also joins the supplemental weight to the handle assembly, and wherein the supplemental weight can be joined to the handle without joining the first weight to the handle assembly. 6. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 5 , wherein the first weight is joined to the handle assembly by engagement with the first weight selection feature of the at least one disc positioned on one side of the first weight, and wherein the supplemental weight is joined to the handle assembly at least by engagement with another disc of the one or more discs position on an opposite side of the first weight. 7. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 5 , wherein the supplemental weight comprises an engagement feature on a side of the supplemental weight opposite the first weight for joining the supplemental weight to the handle assembly independently of the first weight. 8. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 5 , wherein the supplemental weight is joined to the handle assembly, when the first weight is joined to the handle assembly, by a wall of the first weight that supports the supplemental weight on the first weight. 9. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 5 , further comprising a base that supports any of the plurality of weights not coupled to the handle assembly when the handle assembly is removed from the base, and wherein the supplemental weight is not directly supported on the base. 10. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 5 , further comprising a plurality of discs that rotate about the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly for selectively coupling weights to the handle assembly, and wherein each of the plurality of discs comprises weight selection features on both sides of the disc for engaging and selectively coupling weights to the handle assembly. 11. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 10 , wherein the handle assembly includes a grip portion and wherein a first number of the plurality of discs are positioned on a first side of the grip portion and a remaining number of the plurality of discs are positioned on a second opposite side of the grip portion. 12. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 11 , wherein the grip portion is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly, and wherein rotation of the grip portion causes rotation of the plurality of discs. 13. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of discs rotates in unison with the other discs of the plurality of discs. 14. An adjustable dumbbell system, comprising: a handle assembly; a base; a first weight supported by the base and selectively joined to the handle assembly depending upon a rotational orientation of a first disc with respect to the first weight, wherein the first disc rotates about a longitudinal axis of the handle assembly; and a supplemental weight selectively supported by the first weight and selectively joined to the handle assembly independent of the first weight depending upon a rotational orientation of a second disc with respect to the supplemental weight, wherein the second disc rotates about the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly, wherein the supplemental weight is supported by the first weight when the first weight is joined to the handle assembly, joining the first weight and the supplemental weight to the handle assembly, wherein the supplemental weight is nested within a pocket defined by the first weight. 15. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 14 , wherein the first disc is configured to engage one of a plurality of weights positioned on one side of the first disc and another one of a plurality of weights positioned on the opposite side of the first disc for selectively coupling the one or the other one of the plurality of weights to the handle assembly. 16. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 14 , wherein the first disc includes a first weight selection feature protruding from one side of the first disc and a second weight selection feature protruding from the other side of the first disc. 17. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 14 , wherein the second disc includes a supplemental weight selection feature configured to selectively overlap an engagement feature of the supplemental weight. 18. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 14 , wherein the handle assembly comprises a grip rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly and wherein the first and second discs rotate about the longitudinal axis of the handle assembly when the grip is rotated. 19. The adjustable dumbbell system of claim 14 , wherein the handle assembly comprises an additional disc rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the handle and configured for selectively coupling one or more weights to the handle assembly, wherein the additional disc is located on an opposite side of the grip.
