Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A knob assembly includes a first housing with a sidewall extending from a base and a retention member inwardly extends from the sidewall. An operable second housing includes a selective stopper selectively movable between a first position and a second position relative to the retention member. The operable second housing is further axially operable between a compressed position and an extended position relative to the first housing, and the operable second housing includes a biasing member.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A knob assembly, comprising: a first housing including a retention member that defines a guide slot, the guide slot having a first groove and a second groove; and an operable second housing rotationally and axially operable relative the first housing, the operable second housing including a selective stopper movable between a first position and a second position and operably disposed within the retention member to define a locked position, wherein the first groove is oriented in a first direction, and the second groove is oriented in a second direction. 2. The knob assembly of claim 1 , wherein the locked position is defined by the selective stopper of the operable second housing being retained by the retention member of the first housing. 3. The knob assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first position is defined by the selective stopper positioned within the first groove. 4. The knob assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second groove includes an entry portion, a transition portion, and a guide portion. 5. The knob assembly of claim 4 , wherein the entry portion of the second groove receives the selective stopper from the first groove. 6. The knob assembly of claim 4 , wherein the selective stopper is configured to translate between the entry portion and the guide portion via the transition portion, and wherein the guide portion is offset from the entry portion. 7. A knob assembly for an appliance, comprising: a first housing including a sidewall and a retention member extending from the sidewall, the retention member including a first leg and a second leg, wherein a base of the first housing defines a central opening through which an electromechanical switch extends, and wherein the base defines a channel directly below the retention member; and an operable second housing operably coupled with the first housing and including a selective stopper, the operable second housing being axially operable between a compressed position and an extended position relative the first housing, and wherein the selective stopper is disposed between the first leg and the second leg to define a locked position, wherein the second leg defines an angled portion, and wherein the angled portion is an indicator configured to provide tactile feedback. 8. The knob assembly of claim 7 , wherein the selective stopper engages the angled portion in a counterclockwise rotation of the operable second housing. 9. The knob assembly of claim 7 , wherein the selective stopper is operable between a first position and a plurality of second positions, and wherein the operable second housing is in the compressed position when the selective stopper moves from the first position to one of the plurality of second positions. 10. The knob assembly of claim 7 , wherein the operable second housing is axially operable and rotationally fixed within the locked position. 11. A knob assembly, comprising: a first housing including a sidewall extending from a base and defining a cavity, the first housing also including a retention member extending from the sidewall; and an operable second housing disposed within the cavity of the first housing and defining a gap between a base edge and the base of the first housing, the operable second housing including a selective stopper selectively movable between a first position and a second position relative to the retention member, wherein the retention member defines a guide slot having a first groove and a second groove, and wherein the selective stopper is retained by the first groove of the guide slot in the first position. 12. The knob assembly of claim 11 , wherein the selective stopper is retained by the retention member to define the first position, and wherein the operable second housing is rotationally fixed and axially operable in the first position. 13. The knob assembly of claim 11 , further comprising: an axial biasing member disposed within the gap between the first housing and the operable second housing. 14. The knob assembly of claim 11 , wherein the retention member inwardly extends from the sidewall and includes a first leg and a second leg, wherein the selective stopper is retained between the first and second legs of the retention member to define a locked position. 15. The knob assembly of claim 11 , wherein an unlocked position is defined by the selective stopper disposed outside the retention member in the second position, and wherein the operable second housing is rotationally and axially operable.
