Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A modular IOL system including intraocular primary and secondary components, which, when combined, form an intraocular optical correction device, wherein the secondary component is placed on the primary component within the perimeter of the capsulorhexis, thus avoiding the need to touch or otherwise manipulate the capsular bag. The secondary component may be manipulated, removed, and/or exchanged for a different secondary component for correction or modification of the optical result, on an intra-operative or post-operative basis, without the need to remove the primary component and without the need to manipulate the capsular bag. The primary component may have haptics extending therefrom for centration in the capsular bag, and the secondary component may exclude haptics, relying instead on attachment to the primary component for stability. Such attachment may include actuatable interlocking members.

We claim: 1. An intraocular lens system, comprising: a base having a body including an annular recess, wherein the annular recess has an outer diameter; and an intraocular lens, comprising: an optical body having an edge extending between an anterior surface of the optical body and a posterior surface of the optical body, a first interlocking portion projecting from a first edge of the optical body, wherein the first interlocking portion includes a first section, a second section, and a middle section, and each section is fixed to the first edge, and a second interlocking portion projecting from a second edge of the optical body, wherein the second interlocking portion includes a first arm extending away from a first region of the second edge, a second arm extending away from a second region of the second edge, and a middle portion between the first arm and the second arm, wherein the middle portion is spaced away from a periphery of the second edge, wherein the first and second edges of the optical body are located opposite one another, wherein a distance between an outermost portion of the first interlocking portion and an outermost portion of the second interlocking portion is greater than the outer diameter of the annular recess, wherein the first interlocking portion is fixed and the second interlocking portion is actuatable between a radially compressed position and an uncompressed extended position, and wherein the body of the base is configured to receive the intraocular lens, with the first and second interlocking portions securing the intraocular lens to the base. 2. The intraocular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second arms are connected by a hinge. 3. The intraocular lens system of claim 2 , wherein the hinge lies along a centerline of the intraocular lens. 4. The intraocular lens system of claim 3 , wherein the centerline bisects the optical body and the hinge. 5. The intraocular lens system of claim 3 , wherein the centerline intersects with the outermost portions of the first and second interlocking portions. 6. The intraocular lens system of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a sidewall extending in an anterior-posterior direction, an anterior rim extending radially-inwardly from the sidewall, and a posterior rim extending radially-inwardly from the sidewall, and wherein portions of the sidewall, the anterior rim, and the posterior rim form the annular recess. 7. An intraocular lens system, comprising: a base having an annular body including a recess; and an intraocular lens, comprising: an optical body having an edge extending between an anterior surface of the optical body and a posterior surface of the optical body, a first interlocking portion projecting from a first edge of the optical body, wherein the first interlocking portion includes a first section, a second section, and a middle section, and each section is fixed to the first edge, and a second interlocking portion projecting from a second edge of the optical body, wherein the second interlocking portion includes a first arm extending away from a first region of the second edge, a second arm extending away from a second region of the second edge, and a middle portion between the first arm and the second arm, wherein the middle portion is spaced away from a periphery of the second edge, wherein the first and second edges of the optical body are located opposite one another, wherein the first interlocking portion is fixed and the second interlocking portion is actuatable between a compressed position and an uncompressed extended position, and wherein the annular body of the base is configured to receive the intraocular lens, with the first and second interlocking portions extending into the recess, and with the annular body maintaining an interlocking connection, to secure the intraocular lens to the base. 8. The intraocular lens system of claim 7 , wherein the first arm and the second arm are connected by a flexible connection. 9. The intraocular lens system of claim 8 , wherein the flexible connection is elastically deformable, and spring-biased to urge the second interlocking portion toward the extended configuration. 10. The intraocular lens system of claim 8 , wherein the flexible connection includes a hinge. 11. An intraocular lens system, comprising: a base having a body including a continuous recess; and an intraocular lens, comprising: an optical body having an edge extending between an anterior surface of the optical body and a posterior surface of the optical body, a first interlocking portion projecting from a first edge of the optical body, wherein the first interlocking portion includes a first section, a second section, and a middle section, and each section is fixed to the first edge, and a second interlocking portion projecting from a second edge of the optical body, wherein the second interlocking portion includes a first arm extending away from a first region of the second edge, a second arm extending away from a second region of the second edge, and a middle portion between the first arm and the second arm, wherein the middle portion is spaced apart from a periphery of the second edge, and the middle portion includes a hinge positioned at a centerline of the intraocular lens, wherein the first interlocking portion is fixed and the second interlocking portion is actuatable between a compressed position and an uncompressed extended position, wherein the body of the base is configured to receive the intraocular lens, with the first and second interlocking portions extending into the continuous recess, to secure the intraocular lens to the base. 12. The intraocular lens system of claim 11 , wherein the centerline bisects the optical body. 13. The intraocular lens system of claim 11 , wherein the centerline bisects the second interlocking portion. 14. The intraocular lens system of claim 11 , wherein the centerline bisects the hinge. 15. An intraocular lens system, comprising: a base having an annular recess, wherein the annular recess has an outer diameter bordered by a wall; and an intraocular lens, comprising: an optical body having an edge region extending between an anterior surface of the optical body and a posterior surface of the optical body, wherein the optical body has a diametrical width extending between diametrically opposed portions of the edge region, a first interlocking portion projecting from a first edge region of the optical body, wherein the first interlocking portion includes a first section, a second section, and a middle section, and each section is fixed to the first edge region, and a second interlocking portion projecting from a second edge region of the optical body, wherein the second interlocking portion includes a first arm extending away from a first region of the second edge region, a second arm extending away from a second region of the second edge region, and a middle portion between the first arm and the second arm, wherein the middle portion is spaced away from the second edge region, wherein the first and second edge regions of the optical body are diametrically opposed, wherein a distance between outermost portions of the first and the second interlocking portions is greater than the diametrical width of the optical body. 16.
