An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprises a cylindrical shaft and a blade at a distal or free end of the shaft, the blade being unitary and continuous with the shaft, without an intervening joint. The shaft has a longitudinal axis and the blade includes a flat or planar blade body with a proximal end eccentrically disposed relative to the shaft axis. Thus, the blade body or at least a proximal end portion thereof is disposed eccentrically relative to the shaft. The blade in its entirely may be inclined relative to the shaft axis or extend parallel thereto.

What is claimed is: 1. An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis and a flat blade located entirely in a single plane and extending from a distal or free end of said shaft to a distal or free end of said blade, said blade being unitary and continuous with said shaft, without an intervening joint, said blade having a proximal end eccentrically disposed relative to said axis, said blade extending at an angle with respect to said axis and intersecting said axis, said blade having at least one edge or peripheral surface in the form of an endless cylindrical section or perimetral surface continuous and coaxial with a cylindrical outer surface of said shaft. 2. The surgical instrument defined in claim 1 wherein said shaft has an end face contiguous with said proximal end of said blade, said shaft having a channel or bore with an outlet in said end face. 3. The surgical instrument defined in claim 2 wherein said blade body has a through hole communicating with said channel or bore via said outlet. 4. The surgical instrument defined in claim 1 wherein said blade body is provided with an arcuate distal tip. 5. An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis and a blade with a flat or planar blade body at a distal or free end of said shaft, said blade being unitary and continuous with said shaft, without an intervening joint, said blade having a proximal end eccentrically disposed relative to said axis, said blade extending at an angle with respect to said axis and intersecting said axis, said blade having at least one edge or peripheral surface in the form of an endless cylindrical section or perimetral surface continuous and coaxial with a cylindrical outer surface of said shaft, wherein said blade body has a major lateral surface facing said axis, said blade body being provided in said major lateral surface with a tapered longitudinal groove having a depth and cross-sectional area each varying with distance along said groove. 6. The surgical instrument defined in claim 5 wherein said blade body is provided with a through slot or hole communicating and continuous with said groove. 7. An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis and a blade with a flat or planar blade body at a distal or free end of said shaft, said blade being unitary and continuous with said shaft, without an intervening joint, said blade having a proximal end eccentrically disposed relative to said axis, said blade extending at an angle with respect to said axis and intersecting said axis, said blade having at least one edge or peripheral surface in the form of an endless cylindrical section or perimetral surface continuous and coaxial with a cylindrical outer surface of said shaft, wherein said shaft has an end face contiguous with said proximal end of said blade body, said shaft having a channel or bore with an outlet in said end face, said blade body having a planar first major lateral surface and a planar second major lateral surface facing oppositely to one another, said blade body being provided in said first major lateral surface with a longitudinal groove, said blade body being further provided with a through hole at an end of said groove, said through hole extending from said planar first major lateral surface to said planar second major lateral surface. 8. The surgical instrument defined in claim 7 wherein said second major lateral surface is formed with an additional groove communicating with said through hole. 9. The surgical instrument defined in claim 8 wherein said additional groove is tapered from a wide end at said through hole and a closed narrow end at said second major lateral surface. 10. An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising: a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis, a cylindrical outer surface and an end face at a distal or free end of said shaft, said shaft having a longitudinal channel or bore extending to at outlet in said end face; a blade contiguous with said distal or free end of said shaft at said distal end face; and a connector portion configured for attachment to an electromechanical transducer device, said shaft extending in a straight-line or linear configuration from said connector portion at a proximal end to said blade at said distal or free end of said shaft, said blade being unitary and continuous with said shaft, without an intervening joint, said blade including a flat or planar blade body extending at an angle with respect to said axis, said blade body extending only within a cylindrical envelope, inclusive of said cylindrical envelope, that is coaxial and co-cylindrical with said cylindrical outer surface of said shaft. 11. The surgical instrument defined in claim 10 wherein said blade has a pair of major lateral surfaces and a through hole extending between said major lateral surfaces, said through hole being located distally of and spaced from said end face of said shaft. 12. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11 wherein said blade is provided in at least one of said major lateral surfaces with a groove contiguous and communicating with said through hole. 13. The surgical instrument defined in claim 12 wherein said groove is a first groove, said blade being provided in another one of said major lateral surfaces with a second groove contiguous and communicating with said through hole. 14. The surgical instrument defined in claim 13 wherein one of said first groove and said second groove extends between said outlet and said through hole and the other of said first groove and said second groove extends away from said through hole on a distal side thereof, opposite said outlet. 15. An ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising: a cylindrical shaft having a longitudinal axis and an end face at a distal or free end of said shaft; and a blade contiguous with said distal or free end of said shaft at said end face, said blade being unitary and continuous with said shaft, without an intervening joint, said blade including a flat or planar blade body extending at an angle with respect to said axis, said shaft having a channel or bore with an outlet in said end face, said shaft having a cylindrical inner surface defining said channel or bore, said blade body extending across a first cylinder that is co-cylindrical with said inner surface, a distal terminal portion of said blade body being located entirely between said first cylinder and a second cylinder that is co-cylindrical with an outer surface of said shaft, said terminal portion being continuous without break or interruption. 16. The surgical instrument defined in claim 15 wherein said blade body has a pair of major lateral surfaces and a through hole extending between said major lateral surfaces, said through hole being located proximally of and spaced from said terminal portion.
