Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A smart mirror can show live or recorded streaming video of an instructor performing a workout in a package that is attractive and unobtrusive enough to hang in a living room. The smart mirror includes a mirror surface with a fully reflecting section and a partially reflecting section. A display behind the partially reflecting section shows the video when the smart mirror is on and is almost invisible when the smart mirror is off. The smart mirror also has a speaker, a microphone, and a camera to enable a user to view the video content and interact with the instructor. The smart mirror may connect to the user's smart phone, a peripheral device (e.g., a Bluetooth speaker) to augment user experience, a biometric sensor to provide biometric data to assess user performance, and/or a network router to connect the smart mirror to a content provider, an instructor, and/or other users.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. An interactive exercise system, comprising: a communications interface to receive a streamed video file representing video of an exercise instructor performing an exercise; a display panel, operably coupled to the communications interface and configured to display, concurrently and during operation of the interactive exercise system: the video of the exercise instructor performing the exercise, information about a first user, the information about the first user including an avatar for the first user and performance data of the first user, the performance data of the first user generated based on a sensor worn by the first user, and information about a second user different from the first user, the information about the second user including an avatar for the second user and performance data of the second user; and a semi-reflective mirror, mechanically coupled to and overlaying the display panel, the mirror configured to (1) reflect an image of at least a first portion of the first user, (2) transmit the displayed video of the exercise instructor performing the exercise, and (3) partially reflect an image of at least a second portion of the first user that overlaps with the displayed video, such that the partially reflected image appears superimposed on the displayed video. 2. The interactive exercise system of claim 1 , further comprising a safety film coupled to the mirror. 3. The interactive exercise system of claim 2 , wherein the safety film is patterned to provide a seamless appearance between a portion of the mirror that overlays the display panel and a portion of the mirror that does not overlay the display panel, during operation of the interactive exercise system. 4. The interactive exercise system of claim 1 , wherein each edge from a plurality of edges of the mirror is exposed. 5. The interactive exercise system of claim 1 , further comprising a frame, disposed behind the mirror, to hold the display panel in position, the frame having a width equal to or smaller than a width of the mirror and having a height equal to or smaller than a height of the mirror. 6. The interactive exercise system of claim 5 , wherein the frame is a first frame, the system further comprising a second frame removably coupled to the first frame and mounted at least one of in front of the mirror or to the side of the mirror, such that at least a portion of the second frame is visible to the first user. 7. The interactive exercise system of claim 1 , further comprising a decorative frame removably coupled to at least one edge of the mirror and mounted at least one of in front of the mirror or to the side of the mirror, such that at least a portion of the decorative frame is visible to the first user. 8. An interactive exercise method, comprising: receiving, from a first interactive video system from a plurality of interactive video systems, a selection of a streamable video file representing video of an exercise instructor performing an exercise, the first interactive video system including a semi-reflective mirror and a display panel mechanically coupled to the mirror, each user from a plurality of users being associated with a different interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems; transmitting the streamable video file to each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems other than the first interactive video system; and for each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems: causing display of the video on a display panel of that interactive video system; and while displaying the video, reflecting an image of the user associated with that interactive video system via the mirror of that interactive video system, the video appearing superimposed on at least a portion of the image of the user associated with that interactive video system. 9. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , the receiving the selection of the streamable video file including receiving an indication of a start time for display of the video. 10. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising causing display, via each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems, of user information for the user associated with that interactive video system, the user information including at least one of: an avatar for that user, a video of that user exercising responsive to the display of the video, biometric data of that user, or progress information associated with that user. 11. The interactive exercise method of claim 10 , wherein the user information includes the video of that user exercising responsive to the display of the video, the interactive exercise method further comprising recording the video of that user via a camera of that interactive video system. 12. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising causing display, at each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems, of user information for each user from the plurality of users, the user information for each user including at least one of: an avatar for that user, a video of that user exercising responsive to the display of the video, biometric data of that user, or progress information associated with that user. 13. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising causing display, at each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems and during the display of the video, of an indication of a ranking of each user from the plurality of users, each ranking based on biometric information for that user. 14. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising: receiving, from the interactive video system associated with any user from the plurality of users, a message and an indication of at least one recipient user from the plurality of users; causing transmission of the message to the interactive video systems associated with the at least one recipient user; and displaying, via the display panels of the interactive video systems associated with the at least one recipient user, the message to the at least one recipient user. 15. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising: acquiring, for each user from the plurality of users and after completion of display of the video, at least one of a post-workout image or a post-workout video, via a camera of the interactive video system associated with that user, thereby generating at least one of a set of post-workout images or a set of post-workout videos; and causing display, at each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems, of the at least one of the set of post-workout images or the set of post-workout videos. 16. The interactive exercise method of claim 8 , further comprising: acquiring, for each user from the plurality of users and after completion of display of the video, at least one of a post-workout image or a post-workout video, via a camera of the interactive video system or smartphone associated with that user, thereby generating at least one of a set of post-workout images or a set of post-workout videos; and causing display, at each interactive video system from the plurality of interactive video systems, of the at least one of the set of post-workout images or the set of post-workout videos. 17. An interactive exercise method, comprising: receiving, from a first interactive video system associated with a user, a selection of a video file representing video of an exercise instructor performing an exer
