In various embodiments of the present disclosure, a surgical catheter is provided. The present disclosure provides a catheter shaft that includes a distal portion and a proximal portion. The proximal portion comprises a handle operably connected to the distal portion of the elongated structure. The distal portion three radially positioned polymeric layers. At least two of the layers include chemically dissimilar polymers and at least one of the three layers includes functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).

What is claimed: 1. A catheter comprising the following: an elongated structure, wherein the elongated structure has a distal portion and a proximal portion: a handle operably connected to a proximal end of the proximal portion of the elongated structure; wherein: the distal portion comprises a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises three radially positioned distal polymeric layers, wherein at least two of the three layers include chemically dissimilar polymers and at least one of the three layers includes functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the proximal portion includes three radially positioned proximal polymeric layers corresponding to the layers of the distal portion, wherein one of the proximal polymeric layers corresponding to the layer of functionalized PVDF of the distal portion is formed from a polar polymer, and wherein the one of the proximal polymeric layers corresponding to the layer of functionalized PVDF is formed from a polymer that is chemically dissimilar to the functionalized PVDF. 2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the functionalized PVDF comprises vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene grafted with maleic anhydride. 3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the distal portion includes an inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, and wherein the inner polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises a PVDF copolymer, and the outer polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF. 4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the distal portion includes an inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, and wherein the inner polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF, and the outer polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer. 5. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the distal portion includes an inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, and wherein the inner polymeric layer comprises a PVDF copolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF, and the outer polymeric layer comprises a PVDF copolymer. 6. The catheter shaft of claim 5 , wherein the PVDF copolymer comprises a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropylene. 7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the distal portion includes an inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, and wherein the inner polymeric layer comprises nylon. 8. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the distal portion includes an inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, and wherein the inner polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF, and the outer polymeric layer comprises nylon. 9. The catheter shaft of claim 8 , wherein the nylon is selected from the group consisting of nylon 11, nylon 12, and combinations thereof. 10. A catheter shaft, comprising the following: a proximal segment; a handle operatively connected to the proximal segment; a transitional segment; and a distal segment; wherein each of the proximal segment, the transitional segment, and the distal segment has a corresponding inner polymeric layer, a middle polymeric layer, and an outer polymeric layer, wherein at least one of the three layers in the transitional segment includes functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and wherein at least one of the layers in the distal segment and proximal segment corresponding to the transitional layer of functionalized PVDF is formed of a polar polymer, and wherein the polar polymer includes a polymer that is different than the functionalized PVDF. 11. The catheter shaft of claim 10 , wherein the inner polymeric layer of each segment is formed of the functionalized PVDF. 12. The catheter shaft of claim 10 , wherein the transitional segment and the distal segment each has an inner polymeric layer formed of at least one type of polyamide, a middle polymeric layer formed of the functionalized PVDF, and an outer polymeric layer formed of a polymer selected from the group consisting of PVDF homopolymer and PVDF copolymer. 13. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein the functionalized PVDF comprises vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene grafted with maleic anhydride. 14. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein the functionalized PVDF comprises a PVDF copolymer. 15. The catheter shaft of claim 14 , wherein the PVDF copolymer comprises a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropylene. 16. A catheter comprising the following: an elongated structure, wherein the elongated structure has a distal portion and a proximal portion: a handle operably connected to a proximal end of the proximal portion of the elongated structure; wherein: the distal portion comprises a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises three radially positioned distal polymeric layers, wherein at least two of the three layers include chemically dissimilar polymers and at least one of the three layers includes functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the three radially positioned polymeric layers include an inner polymeric layer, an outer polymeric layer, and a middle polymeric layer, and the proximal portion includes three radially positioned proximal polymeric layers corresponding to the layers of the distal portion, wherein one of the proximal polymeric layers corresponding to the layer of functionalized PVDF of the distal portion is formed from a polar polymer, wherein the polar polymer is chemically dissimilar to the layer of functionalized PVDF. 17. The catheter of claim 16 , wherein the inner polymeric layer of the shaft of the distal portion comprises nylon. 18. The catheter of claim 16 , wherein the inner polymeric layer of the shaft of the distal portion comprises a PVDF homopolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF, and the outer polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer. 19. The catheter of claim 16 , wherein the inner polymeric layer of the distal portion of the shaft comprises a PVDF homopolymer, the middle polymeric layer comprises the functionalized PVDF, and the outer polymeric layer comprises a PVDF homopolymer.
