An optical connector assembly having an adapter with a first and second end. Either end can accept a connector with a removable, detachable and replaceable coupling nut that when removed, connector outer diameter is substantially reduced, thereby allowing said connector to be inserted through a conduit having an inner diameter substantially less than outer diameter of separable coupling nut.

The invention claimed is: 1. An optical fiber connector assembly comprising: a connector body having a first end, a second end and a longitudinal axis extending between the first and second ends, the first end configured to receive a first fiber optic connector and the second end configured to receive a fiber optic cable; a coupling nut received around a portion of the connector body and rotatable on the body about the longitudinal axis, the coupling nut including a nut section and a locking section configured to attach the optical fiber connector assembly to a bulkhead, the coupling nut comprising body portions separable from one another along the longitudinal axis of the connector body so that the body portions may receive the connector body in a clamshell manner, the body portions each including part of the nut section and part of the lock section and being configured to connect to each other for retaining the coupling nut on the connector body. 2. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 1 wherein the coupling nut has an exterior surface and an interior surface, the locking section being located on the exterior surface of the coupling nut. 3. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 2 wherein the locking section comprises a quarter turn lock. 4. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 3 wherein the locking section comprises a bayonet lock. 5. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 1 wherein one of the body portions includes a latch and another of the body portions includes a receptacle for receiving the latch to connect the body portions together. 6. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 1 wherein the connector body includes a recess receiving the nut section of the coupling nut. 7. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 1 in combination with the fiber optic connector. 8. The optical fiber connector assembly according to claim 1 wherein the connector body and coupling nut are configured for resisting ingress of water into the fiber optic connector assembly. 9. A method for passing a fiber optic connector assembly through structure having a diameter less than a maximum diameter of the fiber optic connector assembly comprising the steps of: providing the fiber optic connector assembly including a connector body having a first end, a second end and a longitudinal axis extending between the first and second ends, the fiber optic connector assembly mounting a fiber optic connector in the first end thereof, the fiber optic connector assembly further including a coupling nut received on the connector body, the coupling nut defining the maximum diameter of the fiber optic connector assembly; removing the coupling nut from the connector body; inserting the connector body through the structure having diameter less than the maximum diameter of the fiber optic connector assembly; attaching the coupling nut to a portion of the connector body that has passed through the structure. 10. The method according to claim 9 wherein the step of removing the coupling nut from the connector body comprises disconnecting body portions of the coupling nut from each other. 11. The method according to claim 10 wherein removing the coupling nut from the connector body further comprises moving the disconnected body portions in a direction radially outward form the longitudinal axis of the connector body to remove the coupling nut from the connector body. 12. The method according to claim 9 wherein the step of attaching the coupling nut to the portion of the connector body comprises connecting body portions of the coupling nut to each other around the portion of the connector body. 13. The method according to claim 9 wherein the structure comprises a conduit.
