The invention claimed is: 1. A merchandising system, comprising: a display system for displaying a plurality of products, wherein the plurality of products are arranged in a plurality of separate rows; a movable barrier mounted to the display system and extending in a downward direction, the movable barrier located at least partially above the plurality of products, wherein the movable barrier is rotatable between an open position which permits removal of at least one of the plurality of products from the display system and a closed position which obstructs access to the plurality of products; an alert device configured to provide at least one signal when the movable barrier is in the open position; and a sensor configured to detect that the movable barrier is in the open position, and the sensor configured to communicate to the alert device that the movable barrier is in the open position; and wherein the at least one signal is configured to include an audible signal. 2. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the alert device is configured to provide a signal when the alert device has been in the open position for a predetermined period of time. 3. The merchandising system of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined period of time is adjustable. 4. The merchandising system of claim 3 , further comprising a receiver and wherein the at least one signal provided by the alert device includes a signal configured to be received by the receiver. 5. The merchandising system of claim 4 , wherein the receiver is a computer. 6. The merchandising system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one signal is received by the computer for further signal processing, and wherein the further signal processing includes determining whether a theft situation exists. 7. The merchandising system of claim 4 , wherein the receiver is a portable signal receiving device. 8. The merchandising system of claim 7 , wherein the portable signal receiving device is a cellular telephone. 9. The merchandising system of claim 8 , further comprising a security camera. 10. The merchandising system of claim 9 , further comprising a monitor, the monitor capable of displaying video from the security camera or advertisement from a video source. 11. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes an infrared signal. 12. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes a radio-frequency signal. 13. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes a cellular signal. 14. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes an ultrasonic signal. 15. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes a digital signal. 16. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes an analog signal. 17. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal from the alert device includes an electronic signal. 18. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a push-button switch. 19. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a motion sensor. 20. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a magnetic switch. 21. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of products are urged toward the movable barrier. 22. The merchandising system of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of products are urged toward the movable barrier by gravity. 23. The merchandising system of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of products are urged toward the movable barrier by a spring-urged pusher. 24. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the movable barrier is made from a clear material. 25. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the movable barrier is made from an opaque material. 26. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the movable barrier is made from a semi-transparent material. 27. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the movable barrier spans one row of the plurality of products. 28. The merchandising system of claim 1 , wherein the movable barrier spans multiple rows of the plurality of products. 29. A merchandising system, comprising: a display system for displaying a plurality of products, wherein the plurality of products are arranged in a plurality of separate rows; a movable barrier mounted to the display system and extending in a downward direction, the movable barrier located at least partially above the plurality of products, wherein the movable barrier is rotatable between an open position which permits removal of at least one of the plurality of products from the display system and a closed position which obstructs access to the plurality of products; an alert device configured to provide at least one signal when the movable barrier is in the open position; and a sensor configured to detect that the movable barrier is in the open position, and the sensor configured to communicate to the alert device that the movable barrier is in the open position; and wherein the movable barrier spans one row of the plurality of products. 30. The merchandising system of claim 29 , wherein the alert device is configured to provide a signal when the alert device has been in the open position for a predetermined period of time. 31. The merchandising system of claim 30 , further comprising a receiver and wherein the at least one signal provided by the alert device includes a signal configured to be received by the receiver. 32. The merchandising system of claim 31 , wherein the receiver is a computer. 33. The merchandising system of claim 31 , wherein the receiver is a portable signal receiving device. 34. A merchandising system, comprising: a display system for displaying a plurality of products, wherein the plurality of products are arranged in a plurality of separate rows; a movable barrier mounted to the display system and extending in a downward direction, the movable barrier located at least partially above the plurality of products, wherein the movable barrier is rotatable between an open position which permits removal of at least one of the plurality of products from the display system and a closed position which obstructs access to the plurality of products; an alert device configured to provide at least one signal when the movable barrier is in the open position; and a sensor configured to detect that the movable barrier is in the open position, and the sensor configured to communicate to the alert device that the movable barrier is in the open position; and wherein the movable barrier spans multiple rows of the plurality of products. 35.
