Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure relates to gripping surfaces and devices comprising the same, wherein the gripping surface comprises a shape tunable surface microstructure, wherein the height, width and spatial periodicity of the microstructures corresponds to an integer multiple of Schallamach wave amplitudes and wavelengths of a target surface, wherein the device microstructures and induced Schallamach waves are entrained by applying strain to the device.

What is claimed is: 1. A device with a gripping surface comprising a substrate on which is disposed a surface microstructure, wherein the surface microstructure comprises a thickness of 20 microns to 1000 microns and further comprises a plurality of microfeatures having a height and a width, wherein the plurality of microfeatures are grouped into sections such that a first section of a first plurality of microfeatures is positioned parallel to a second section of a second plurality of microfeatures, and wherein a groove is disposed between the first and second sections, the groove having a width from 50 microns to 200 microns which is configured to correspond to an integer multiple of Schallamach wave amplitudes and wavelengths of a target surface and wherein the surface microstructure is configured such that the Schallamach waves are entrained by a plurality of parallel grooves when strain is applied to the device in an orthogonal direction of the parallel grooves. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to develop capillary action between said plurality of microfeatures and said target surface, wherein liquids present at said target surface are drawn into at least one of a microscopic or nanoscopic surface texture scale, and wherein said capillary action is maintained through changes in the microstructure shape of said surface when strain is applied to said surface device. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to produce discrete responses in response to different pressures applied to said surface microstructure. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is resistant to wear due to sliding interfaces established by said surface wherein kinetic oscillation induced on said surface microstructure on a device where the positional relationship between the surface microstructure and a microstructure on the target surface is designed to maximize the kinetic oscillations with respect to the shape of the surface microstructures. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is functionally activated when the strain exceeds 1%, wherein the surface is configured to buckle into wrinkles of anticipated wavelength when strain is applied to the surface, wherein an amplitude of said wrinkles exhibits an inverse-quadratic relationship to spatial wavelength wherein said amplitude decreases in the range of 10 to 1000 microns. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein said the amplitude and spatial periodicity of the surface microstructure have an aspect ratio that is inversely quadratic with respect to strain in the range of strain from about 0.01 to 0.20. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the composition of the substrate includes a Young's modulus such that a shear stress to the surface microstructure is proportional to the Young's modulus of the substrate composition and a Young's modulus of the target surface. 8. The device of claim 7 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to induce Schallamach waves with amplitude proportional to the difference in the Young's modulus of said composition and the Young's modulus of the target surface. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is comprised of two or more layers wherein the first layer possesses a different Young's modulus relative to the Young's modulus of the second or more layers. 10. The device of claim 9 , wherein said surface microstructure is comprised of hierarchical microstructures, wherein each hierarchical layer comprises a different Young's moduli. 11. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure comprises hierarchical microstructures and wherein the substrate has a thickness selected to create maximal grip for a target surface. 12. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to develop adhesion junctions between the device and the target surface, wherein the shear force is characterized by energy dissipation at regions immediately adjacent to a contact area. 13. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to develop Coulomb locking between the device and the target surface, wherein the shear force is characterized by surface energy reduction between the device and target surface at regions within a contact area. 14. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to develop Schallamach plowing, adhesion junctions and Coulomb locking between the device and the target surface. 15. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to develop Coulomb locking between the device and the target surface, wherein the Coulomb locking occurs between the spatial periodicity of the plurality of microfeatures and eigen wrinkles in the target surface. 16. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to distribute the external shear stress at the interface between the microstructure surface and the target surface such that the shear stress is maximally uniform over the contact area between the microstructure surface and target surface. 17. The device of claim 1 , wherein said substrate distributes the external shear stress at the interface between microstructure surface and target surface such that the shear stress vector at each point of contact between the microstructure surface and target surface minimally deviates from the target vector at that point. 18. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured such that when in contact with the target surface sequential interfacial slip is inhibited by increasing the elastic coupling between the microstructure surface pattern and target surface periodicity. 19. The device of claim 1 , wherein said surface microstructure is configured to interact with a target surface with features that interface, separately or in combination, with 1) the Schallamach wave, 2) a slip pulse and 3) a separation pulse, of the target surface.
